I would add, loosen All strings first, before tapping in the temporary axle. And if needed, loosen the return springs a bit as well.

Once you get in step with having the temp axle in along with the main axle and off-setting them to be able to sneak a finger out, I would replace the offending finger with one you are not using to raise or lower a string, perhaps string 7?

That should get you up and running. Also remember, improperly adjusted return springs can also somewhat affect raises along with the lowers that they return. :)
