Well Chris I always tuned pretty much straight up.
No need for sweetened tuning when you don't play sweet!
I think my way of tuning works fine in a live situation when I'm sliding and jumping around all over the neck in my own E9 unconventional, nonsensical and pointless playing style.
It works for me but don't try this at home!

whatever it is seems to work fine for you bo.
that's my point. everyone just has to figure out what works for them.

Sorry, all I saw was a link to another forum post. Digging down into that, I see a link to a YouTube video by Vikki Lee. Is that the one you're playing steel on? If so, I think the guitars are out of tune on it. The steel sounds okay, though.

the thread that i linked to has many different clips throughout it. some are different studio sessions. some are live. it's what i do. nowhere near what all you pros do but i'm not ashamed of it. none of it is a tabbed out piece that i learned. it's all basically off the cuff. that's what i do. hope i haven't offended anyone.

sorry you had to listen to some guitar that you felt like picking apart. i had nothing to do with the guitar. just some steel and a little simple dobro.
i've done lots of other things but these were some of the ones i had a means to link to. just trying to keep it honest and upfront. not trying to be anything i'm not.

Are Vikki and Albert related?

possibly a cousin by marriage out on a limb of the family tree. i'm pretty sure albert still prefers buddy emmons over me.

The guitars sounded in tune to me.
Nice playing, Chris.

It's a risky business but here's a clip. Saw a guy on YouTube talking about the transition from 6 string guitar to pedal steel, at one point he said,
It takes 2 years on the pedal steel to sound crap
I been at it for 4 years and I'm not as good as that
(I tune sweetened BTW)

Geoff, I actually listened to the whole tune and it really very nicely done. I really think you're on the road to becoming a good steel player.

one last thing to make everyone feel better about
their own tuning ability:

these tunes are really good...except my part which i feel is pitchy and cringeworthy. it was many years ago and i don't know how i was tuning back then or if
it was just a bad day. luckily the overall project was so good that it still came off pretty well.
my steel was mixed a little dryer than normal which always makes pitchiness stand out more, but that's no excuse.

on that cd, i really like 'the storm' and 'honkytonkin's where it's at' inspite of my forementioned weaknesses.
tommy lee moffat's a good singer and writer.
ok...now i welcome b0b to confirm my pitchiness and close this up.

I swear, I was just about to say that I like The Storm when I logged in and saw that you just posted this.
Nice work. It would be a shame to close this thread, IMO.

Wow, that's as good a picking as you could want on that CD Chris. Honky Tonkin' has a great west coast feel to it. You can certainly pick.

Ditto to that. What's more you definitely sound in tune there Chris
