It's fine for the player to wear a western hat but the wannabe cowboys that insist on wearing one in the audience at guitar shows ruin the show for many people sitting behind them.

I grew up on a cattle ranch and have worn a hat my whole life. I wear one most of the time. Jim C. as to proper etiquette, the answer to when to remove ones' hat is ALL OF THE ABOVE except a poker game. Just like in so many other areas, common courtesy and proper etiquette is long gone. I always have to sit behind some clown who won't remove his hat at steel shows. Common decency says be considerate of others!

I never wear any kind of hat. I think they make me look stupid. I think they look great on other folks, it's just me that looks stupid in a hat.

I once was going to play a deal at Pearl's in Ft. Worth so I thought I would wear a hat just like everybody else. I stopped at the Pilot Quick Stop about 30 miles out of Dallas and low and behold, they had hats there so I bought on of the more expensive ones for 12 bucks. Now I'm going to Pearl's in style. I put the hat in the back seat very carefully and about 10 miles out of Ft. Worth, some dude slammed his breaks on in front of me so had to stop pretty abrupt but avoided an accident so just went on my way. Got to Pearl's and my Nashville 400 was lying face down on my beautiful $12 cowboy hat and needless to say, it was flat as a pancake. From then on I made a promise to myself, no cowboy hats. I still have my flat hat hanging in my bedroom just for show.

I have a resistal in the closet made of beaver.I only wear it maybe a few days a year, since it is so nice. Also I have a full head of hair at my age and would like to keep it.Just like pro quarterbacks,if you notice, even the ones that have been in the league a year of so,are already getting the male pattern baldness loss of hair.I always have kept my hat wearing to a minumum.Just a thought maybe just me.

Come on, I'm from Pittsburgh. Last time I wore a cowboy hat was Halloween 1962. I was the Lone Ranger. Chris Ivey, I think your tone would improve if you were to take the hat off of your guitar. :) stevet
