Thanks Gordon. I'm glad you like my music.

Some people are fat because they eat too much. Some are fat because they eat a lot of things they should not. Some because of their metabolism. There are probably as many different reasons as there are people.

The problem is that we as a society have cast a value judgment on this and look upon being overweight as a character defect. Somehow, fat people are morally inferior to thin ones. Even if their weight is determined by factors beyond their control.

I started this thread as a light-hearted not too serious thing, but this issue of people making value judgments about others based on their weight is a real issue that unfairly affects a lot of people.

I went from 300 to 189 since October. 65 years old and never felt better in my life! In my case, it was entirely mis-placed self-gratification that caused my weight. No pathological excuses. The great gain in health, vigor, and self-esteem was well worth the few months of self-control!

IF you are happy with excess weight- your choice...I miss a good old pigout!...but healthy weight sure feels better (I'm embarrassed to say after decades as a fat man.)

You know, I've decided not to answer this question on the grounds that it may tend to incriminate me.

Some years back I started a thread called "The Steel Player, the FAT GUY in the band" or something like that. The main purpose was to call attention to the FACT that as far as other instruments go, I think there's more of a weight problem among steelers than say lead guitarists, fiddlers, etc.

I remember when I only played lead guitar and I was nice and thin but over the years as I've set BEHIND a steel I've gained a bunch of weight till I'm up to 275 lbs. now. I should weigh about 220 or so as I'm 6'4" tall and I looked OK at that weight. It's mostly in the belly now and it's hard to get close to your steel with the gut in front.

Just go to the steel conventions and watch all the "Porkers Pushin' Pedals" at all of 'em :D  Maybe it's because we're not "out in front" like the players of other instruments, what do you think? ....JH in Va.

Getting fat

I just started playing lap steel in a country band and I am already a few pounds over. I have been looking to pick up a pedal steel in the near future but now I wonder. I should start eating better now because by the time I learn how to play pedal steel it could be awhile. A sweet sounding instrument like pedal steel is worth the challenge. Mike

Don't try this.

I lost 20 lbs of fluid from around my ribcage in 2 days. I nearly missed an "opportunity" to continue my life saving chemo because some chunky nurse thought I was 'losing too much weight'.

About three years ago when I thought I was "cancer free" I started collecting different size pants. jaclets etc.

I run from 38 waist down to 32 for squeezing into pants. What's even more frustrating MP as you've pointed out is not being able to lose weight from a medical condition, or malady and as I point out TRYING TO GAIN is just as frustating. The weaker you get, the harder it is to excersize. It's one of Life's little "tricks". Both can be frustrating in a hospital. Made only wose by pain. Not made much better by well wishers that hope you don't take too many pain pills rather than that you are out of pain.

I was thinking of "The Dutchman" by the Late Steve Goodman of years ago. Remembering the time or my visit to Amsterdam and Holland for the 1976 Festival of Fools in 76,Just before I picked up my first Sho~Bub. Quite a haunting song, and quite a memory looking UP at ships moored along the Ocean Wall..

What a bunch of Memories we all are Mike, as I tearfully go out for my 'constitutinal' and think of a slight part of them.

I remember our friend Winnie had a bit of trouble keeping the weight on as well. Come to think of it Mike A wasn't exactly "packing it on" last I heard...

Your Friend

Seriously, I have put on about 40 lbs over the past 4-5 years. I'm 6'1" and have always been around 190, but I'm working on it. Just too many goodies around the PD, along with fresh Farmington Bakery goods!

I now ride my Harley every day. I have dropped eight pounds.
None of us like what happen to us with the big belly regardless of the reason it happen. If we could wish it and get thin we would.
What would a flat stomach do for our ego? TONS! More than likely it is not going to happen. So we cope with it and know we belong to a group of folks that know the same exact feeling.
For me to get thin again is like I will play steel like the Big "E". It ain't going to happen but it is something to work at. The key here is an effort.
Gordon.
