Too many to call any one of them No. 1, but Papa John's solo in "Look At Us" was the reason I started playing steel, and that song was also the song played for the "first dance" at our wedding reception. It is still pretty special and always will be to us.

Anything with steel in it that Tammy sang puts tears in my eyes, partly for the sadness I feel for her life's tragedies. So sad an ending for, in my opinion, the first lady of country music, all time.

Yes, which session man played this, it has to be Pete Drake.
Not so Alan. Lloyd Green has asked me to post this for clarification purposes and historical accuracy.

In “Pedal Steel” -(Topic) Best Crying Steel, The Tammy Wynette song “Crying Steel Guitar” . I played steel on that record, not Pete Drake.
Ken,
Thanks for that, Id always thought it was pete Drake It just doesn't sound like lloyd, maybe Billy Sherill asked him to sound like Pete.....well, well ,well something else learned.

Waltz Across Texas by E.T. or anything with Buddy Charleton. Sweet Dreams by Faron Young which was the Big E. How about Blue Jade, which isn't back-up, but so beautiful. Rain Making Baby Of Mine, Weldon Myrick with Johnny Bush. Just Like A Woman, Tom Brumley with Ricky Nelson. Hughey on Hello Darlin' by Conway Twitty. Bobby Black on Seeds & Stems live with Commander Cody. That's a start.

Johnny Bush`s orginals of "When My Conscious Hurts The Most", "I`ll Go To A Stranger" and "Right Back In Your Arms Again". I do not know who played the steel on the orginals. Sounds like Dicky, but it may be Weldon,Jimmy,or Buddy.

Speaking of Johnny Bush, his version of "That's All That Matters To Me" is a clinic of crying steel guitar. I'd guess Dickie Overbie or maybe Rick Price. Perhaps Herb Steiner would know for sure.

Just discovered that song- really love it too.

Who plays pedal on Hank Jr's early version of "Standing in the Shadow"? Really like this one too...

Several years ago there used to be a clip on the Forum of Reggie Duncan's solo in "Something Out of Nothing"......I saved that short video clip--it's still on my desktop, and still knocks me out every time I play it....Simply awesome....

Another great song with cryin' steel is, "Tonight Cowboy You're Mine" by Joey & Rory, which appeared on their first record "The Life Of A Song". It features Mike Johnson on steel and Mike plays a crying steel solo after the second verse and changes the key.

Yes!
The version Johnny Bush did 1968, I think it's Jimmy Day on that steel!
Just beautifull!

From the "Gram Parsons Live" college radio broadcast. Neil Flanz' break on "The New Soft Shoe" sounds like a woman on fire! Exquisite tone from, I believe he told me, a student model Sho-Bud.

High Water by Uncle Tupelo was one of the songs that really made me want to tackle the 10 string cheese slicer.

Lloyd Maines. Nice stuff throughout but the solo starts around 2 minutes.

Not that fancy, but it fits the song perfectly.
