Bobby,

Felt the same way you did. Didn't like it. Thought it was long, the love story was preposterous, the "crises" poorly presented, music was good, and Jeff Bridges was good. Can't stand the actress who was the love interest and personally I'm tired of Duval doing the same character for the last 10 years.

I'm in the same boat as you Bobby, as I thought the writing was weak.
Even the song writing was kind of weak, good arrangements and instrumentation and producing, but the lyrics sounded like a hook line with another hook line and then a hook line with no meaning & nothing to tie them together. The one where he says "Sometimes I Feel Like I'm Flying When I'm Falling", could be a great hook line for a song, but then they just add another hook line to it and no story to the song.

Still I give the movie a 6.5 out of 10, because of Bridges acting and that it was so close to being a cool movie.

Alvin, I guess thats the thing. It was so close to being a great movie, if it just had a better written story. The production was great, they just didn't have much story to work with. I also agree Bill, that the love interest was pretty unrealistic. The road scenes, cheap hotels, song request, waking up with the snuff queen, and all the music business stuff were most likely thought up by someone who'd done some road time. These parts were very entertaining on their own, but the dramatic story of the movie was very poor in my opinion.

That actually sums up the "official" reviews I've come across pretty well. I'm still looking forward to seeing it, but mostly because I'm a huge Bridges fan and expect it to have its 'moments'. I suppose if I have my expectations correctly adjusted, there's a good chance I'll enjoy it..

I finally saw this movie. What a disappointment! I'm a fan of most of the actors and songwriters and thought the whole thing was dull as nails. The plot was inexcusably predictable and the songs were amazingly unmemorable.

To their credit, I suppose, I only caught one steel player whose snyc to the music was way off. :)

I spent most of my time thinking about how much I wished I was watching Tender Mercies again instead.

Except for the music and the Actors the script and story line borders very close to "Tender Mercies"..

Good movie, however the steel player who was playing on Weary Kind was obviously playing way more notes than you hear on the soundtrack. Kind of like a really bad lip sync! I noticed the same problem on a few of the guitar solos as well.Still, all in all a really good, if somewhat predictable flick!
