during the 80s we did the HOLIDAY INN circuit, and wore black jeans, white or black tux shirts and gray jackets with several bow ties depending jobs . Went over really well.Didn't cover any musicality or lack of.Don't do western flowered shirts, turtle neck shirts, ripped up anything .
Sorry "W C",wouldn't pay to hear you dressed like you do either.Part of talent & success (IMHO) is also respect & class....don't mean to offend, but really ripped jeans & shirts....NEVER !

Here's two pica of a retro band I play with. This its the only band I play with that dresses up. They are the least experienced musicians I play with, but make far more money than than any of the local allstar groups I work with. I think there is connection. To make my point, here are two shots, same angle, same band. One from sound check and the other from the show.

When I was with Faron in the 80's we looked like this. Apparently, it was casual day for Faron.

We all have matching tee shirts with the name of the band on the back along with a logo. That's as close as any of the bands here get to dressing up. Weddings, funerals, and playing in the band are the only times I wear long pants here in Florida. Larry

My band wears "uniform" when we play. I have a place called "SUNSET BALLROOM" where we have a family show/dance and , when we play out, same white shirt/black pants outfit. My two lady singers dress accordingly. Il try to post a picture.

Showbiz
SHOWBIZZ
NO SHOW=NO BIZZ
I think it`s cool to look retro, if playing in a retro act. Who was it that said "Never underestimate the value of looking cool"
At the same time, the gig will determine how much effort to put into it. You look silly in a Nudie suit if your lugging your own gear in and out of a $75.00 gig at a local dive. I play plenty of those, and don`t over do it, but I try to look like I`m in the band. I think it sends a message to others that may hire you, that you have a professional attitude. Of course it helps if you can play well. That`s what really makes it work. The whole package. It doesn`t matter what you look like if you don`t play well.

Well, Manuel is no doubt the heir to Nudie chic...

I did visit in Nashville after ISGC about 10 years ago and remember seeing some awesome duds - man some of those jackets weighed a ton with the rhinestone work etc. - but was broke from all the psg goodies I'd bought
So, if someone wants to treat me to a jacket I'd probably take a 44R - but just to be safe, y'all better fly me down to try it on in person
