I don't come here often so I just ran across this and am devastated.

Vern was "it" for me. Yes he was certainly known in the "inner circles" of real Country music...("The Voice"...) but he never had the name recognition of George, Merle or Buck etc., and to me that was a sin. His vocals were smooth and velvety but had that "airy bass" quality that made him the perfect Country singer. Beyond that, his songs inspired me (probably more than any other artist) to play steel...his voice and a crying steel in the background were an unbeatable combination.

I'm sure Mr. Gosdin will never know how deeply his music touched many of us but I thank him now for his wonderful talent that he shared with the world.

God Bless him and I'll miss him.

We heard yesterday on RFD that Vern passed away 'last night' and that a memorial would be aired today... with Willie Nelson. He said that Vern had suffered a stroke three weeks ago.

Most Likely the RFD show was a re-run and the source of the confusion regarding Vern Gosdin's passing.
