The Fessenden I currently play has a shimmed out back strip because of the same issue you have. I went down to Lowes and found some thin washers and put them under the rear strip between the body and the the screws, I have played it this way for quite a while and it works just fine. IF I get energetic I may take the cross shafts out and take 30 or 40 thou off of the end of the shafts....... other wise I will wait till I get ANOTHER Fessenden. If you want, PM me and I will call you and talk you through fixing your guitar

After much consideration, I've been thinking that just possibly, you're turning it into a scientific project, rather than a "SIMPLE" mechanical issue.

Bottom line would be to throw the Hygrometer into the trash can, and get to playing the steel.

#1. It's NOT a big issue to make clearance where needed, on anything. It only becomes an issue if a person starts checking out humidity, inserting meters and gauges, instead of doing what needs to be done. And that is: "Make the necessary side to side end clearance, for the Cross Shaft to WORK right.

#2. Bingo, problem solved. It doesn't take a brain surgeon. Simply find out the one/s that need more clearance, and do what you have to do, to give them the needed clearance.

You might even find that all the steel really needed to begin with, was a good cleaning and Lubrication.

Don, I appreciate your input. I want to get on with playing it. I am playing it.

The apron on my guitar is extremely bowed. Jerry said it was due to humidity but my home is not lacking humidity. I may be missing something here but I didn't pay $2500 on a brand new steel to have to start grinding down cross shafts myself. I hope you can appreciate that.
