Red Rhodes played steel on James Taylor's Sweet Baby James and One Man dog albums. Dan Dugmore played on the later stuff. Also Rusty Young on Buffalo Springfield's Kind Woman and an old James Gang album featuring Joe Walsh. Again I can't remember which one!

Not sure any of these ever charted as "hits" but Doug Sahm used Pete Drake for some stuff on a Greatist Hits compilation, and has a record called Doug Sahm and Friends with Charlie Owens playing steel that features Bob Dylan and Fathead Newman:D

Back to Doug Sahm, here's a video of an old Sir Douglas Quintet hit, Nuevo Laredo.
It's a lip sync video but I hear steel and I believe it may have been Doug himself. He was a "child prodigy steeler" according to some liner notes I read.
