Hank Williams songs were mostly 3 or 4 chord progressions but far from simple musicaly. The melodies he sang over the chords implied sus4, 7ths, Major 7ths, and other lush chords.
Then you add the non-pedal steel guitar (6th chords and 1/2 step slides) and these songs became great works of art and still hold up very well today.
