I had a girl come up to me once and ask me what kind of keyboard I was playing. I told her it was a non-pedal lap piano.
Her: "Piano? It doesn't look like any piano I've ever seen."
Me: "No, it doesn't, does it? Have you ever heard of Ben Harper?"
Her: "Oh yeah -- I love his music."
Me: "He plays one of these instruments. They're called 'lap-steel guitars.'"
I of course then took pity on her, and went on to explain the concept of steel guitar. I kept it to less than a minute though, otherwise they go all slack-jaw, and their eyes glaze over.
Actually, I like Ron's version. I think from now on, I'm calling it a "Wrrreeerrrr wrrrooooo wrrrreeeeeeeeerrrrnnnn Guitar."
