A 40 mile radius, only one. Troy Porter, and I could throw a rock and knock out his kitchen window, 50 yards maybe. :D
Some times in the summer when the windows are open he wakes me up at 6:00 A.M or so, just a playing away. :D

Al Michalczak, Where do all those Texas Steel players find work?..Texas seems to have a large concentration of Steel players.

Brad,
I listed the bands that each guy plays with next to his name, at least all that I know. I'm sure I missed a few players and not sure if some are with groups or not. We get work where we can. Social Clubs, VFWs, private parties, etc. A few of the groups have gotten in with party planners and do corporate gigs and conventions that pay very well and fill a bunch of week-day gigs. Some play small town Oprys for little or no money, just the love of the music and the instrument. More bands and fewer clubs every year. From 1981-2001, my group averaged seven nights a month. Now 4-5 is a good month.

Hey ,Mr Jamieson, how about me, I'm about 50 miles away, in Olive, half way between you & Kingston. I play the Apple Fest in Greene , in Chenango County as the Ben Rounds band most years . We have Bill Kieth , Eric Weissberg, & this is where Cindy Cashdollar hails from, we used to go see her in 1980 at the Watering Trough in Woodstock, with "Johnny Average" .a steeler who just passed away, Bob Brocious is in poor health, but a great talent in these parts, Fooch , Connie Mack & a couple others , not many active players . :( Bill

Hello William,
Yes, I forgot the players down in the Woodstock area. They are probably getting just on the other side of the forty mile mark, but include the people you mentioned. I have met Fooch at the Norwalk steel show, met Bill Keith at a gig in Margaretville one night, have talked with Connie via e-mail but we have not met.
I hold an occasional steel jam at my music shop in Walton, NY. I'll invite you all to the next one. Nice to hear from you. You wouldn't think there would be some many players in New York...

I guess I'll play. The only ones I'm aware of:

Chris Ivey
David Wren (a bit more than 40 miles)
Pete Grant (might be for than 40 miles?)
Jay Fagerlie
Jim Grey
Rusty Rogers

I'm sure there's more, but I'm not aware of them.

Living just outside of nashville, it's like a who's who of steel players. Perhaps the closest to me is the BIG "E", about a mile. This close proximity to me has prompted him to replace his "WELCOME" door mat with one which reads "OH NO NOT YOU AGAIN"

and

Or maybe you aren't Slim Pickens, but you were saying "Slim PICKINGS here" ! or even Slim Pickins' here !
Whatever,
I'd have a problem over here if my initials were WC..

Ooops! I forgot Danny Keough lives about 4 miles from me..he can play!

No you wouldn't have a problem if your name was WC. I kind of like it because everywhere I go in the UK they have a room waiting for me. Slim Pickens is also a "figure of speech". It means that the pickens around here are slim meaning no players and just a few owners. I have a promoter bringing me to Australia in June for 2 weeks worth of shows so maybe they'll have a room there also for me if they do the WC thing. When I was in Ireland last June they didn't have the WC on the signs.
