Bill, I couldn't agree more. I didn't think she "cut-it" for her initial audition. There was only ONE Janis Joplin, and that was more than enough (my flame suit's on). Now, if she were to do a version of a Alberta Hunter or Ruth Brown song, that would be cool. 8)

Keep on pickin'!

Hi guys, I didn't get to see the second hour last night but I have it recorded so I guess I know what I will be watching tonight. I will weigh in later.

Josiah is gone. It appears there will not be a "Sanjaya" this year, that is a GOOD thing.

Mike P. Not to hijack this thread, but on what basis do you qualify "Weeds" as a "first class show?" :?

Could it be that the subject matter is near and dear to his heart? I've (ahem) heard that stuff can cloud your judgment.

Well this may be a case of beauty being in the eyes of the beholder but I thing Weeds is one of the funniest shows I ever saw. I burst out laughing at every episode.

I also have a crush on Mary Louise Parker.

THE GIRLS:

I think if Amanda (the nurse) steps out of her box to do something country - she could possibly even have the Tanya Tucker appeal! I'm not ruling her out just yet.

Syesha (the girl who lost her voice) and sang Chain of Fools has a strong voice. I liked her, as well.

But the voice that really blows me away belongs to Tattoo-Girl. I can't wait to hear her sing more contemporary pieces.

THE GUYS:
I hated to see Josiah leave because the mother in me just wanted to throw him over my shoulder and try to burp him. I liked his voice - didn't like his strategy with Standy By Me - He was pretty emotional, but I think due more to not getting any sleep. I really liked him.

I think the guy from Atlanta, Michael Johns, has a beautiful voice and nice stage presence.

But 16 year old David Archelotta will capture the hearts of everyone. His voice is so warm and mature - and he has great control. I'm going to predict that he will be our next American Idol.

Wow Donna! You're predicting a winner already! I've only memorized one name yet...Amanda. I haven't given up on her either, although her second performance didn't impress me quite as much. But she's got something and when she gets working with the coaches they'll steer her in the right direction. If she tamed it down and smoothed it out just a little she could handle Bonnie Raitt material well too.

Donna, did you know that "I Can't Make You Love Me" has been performed on Idol more than one time? I loved Melinda Doolittle and Jordin Sparks. Jordin did a really powerful version of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the SuperBowl this year-it just amazed me! And, if you watched Idol last year or somewhere around there, there was a girl named Amy Krebs on there who sang a wonderful version of "I Can't Make You Love Me" and the recording featured steel. Amy lost the competition, but it was still amazing! There ain't no doubt about it-Melinda was amazing!

I watch the show rarely...and then only when it is the begining of the selection stages. It is funny to watch the "non singers" audition.
The saddest thing about the show, for me anyway, is that a major talent like Randy Jackson would lend himself to a train wreck like this....this guy is an excellent Bassist and producer ..having played with everyone from Jean Luc Ponty, Billy Cobham, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, the list goes on and on......
Just seems sad somehow.

The things people do for money...

I'm still wondering why anyone over the age of 14 would sit and watch this nonsense. A lot of my students watch it, mostly the teenage girls, but I don't know any adults who care about it.

My wife and I have enjoyed watching almost every episode since the show first started.
We find it entertaining, and feel glad when very talented young people get a chance to showcase their skills and jumpstart their deserving careers. I also enjoy the early “bad” auditions because they’re funny without intending to be so, and I find that entertaining. As for comedy, I would prefer to watch my favorite, Whose Line Is It Anyway, but they stopped making new episodes about 5 years ago, though I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of watching reruns of that show.

Back to American Idol, its disappointing when the judges don’t allow a deserving talent to go through to the next level, or when the young unknowing audience keeps voting their favorite on simply because of the way they look or where they’re from, instead of their talent, but it does keep things interesting, and anyway, the contestant doesn’t actually have to win the whole thing in order to establish a large enough fan base to launch their career, providing they truly have the needed skills and make good decisions along the way.

That just goes to show you that you're only young once, but you can be immature forever.

I would love to join the conversation but I haven't learned all the contestant's names yet. Carry on, I will join later.

"That just goes to show you that you're only young once, but you can be immature forever."

Since we're knocking off quotations here, here's one from Oscar Wilde:

"Quotation is a serviceable substitute for wit."

If the ones that watch Idol are immature to you, so be it!
The show is about persuing a dream singing, love of music and I personally commend them for that.

I could think of alot worse things to watch on TV.

You can sing and love music anywhere.

I've been singing and playing since I was 6 years old and have made hundreds of dollars doing it.

These people want to be a star and are willing to sign their life away to Simon and jump through hoops to achieve that goal.

Like Wilf Carter said "The only stars are in the sky and you can see them at night, when there are no clouds."
