I know for a fact, Paul built a S-12 with a Bb 6 th for Willie Honeycutt in the 80's
I played it for a month or so while waiting on a new guitar to be built.. Great Guitar...not sure where it is now..

Teddy Carr, who played steel with the band Ricochet played a black 1994 Franklin D-10. I believe the 1994 Franklin guitar Teddy played is now Steve Feldman's guitar.

Hello Bret! Not attempting to debate with you, but I sold my 1994 D10 To Teddy back in 98 and it was dark Grey not black. It did have a black top, but the front and apron were Grey. I have always regretted selling that one, but I have the brother to it to this day. Great guitars in every regard.

I am fortunate to have one of two or maybe three wood neck Franklins. It is sweet to say the least - and beautiful!

Paul Sr. told me that my D-10 was originally built for Tony Rankin though it came to me from Bob Hoffnar. I don't know if it went through other hands in-between. I'll be forever indebted to the previous owners for passing it along.

Paul Sr. builds a great 12 string. Here are two 12 string guitars Universals he built for me.

Just looking at the comments,Emmons clone, and that being disputed about how different they are with regard to undercarridge ect. and tone, and yet you look at the pictures how many different pick ups are being used on the guitars,do not the original Franklin pick ups give the guitar it's supposed unique sound,Why change, if thats why you buy the guitar in the first place.
How many guys have changed the pick ups and why!!

My Franklin came with Lawrence 705's. I changed them to Lawrence 710's. The 710's do not change the characteristic Franklin tone, but do have better string "separation" compared to the 705.

A good pickup is "transparent" and does not alter the characteristic tone of a guitar. My friend Don Sulesky's Emmons Legrande II has Lawrence 710 pickups on it but it still has the familiar Emmons tone. It didn't alter the tone from the original single coil pickups (but the 710's did eliminate the single coil tendency to hum).

Ray, only the first guitars came with the Franklin single coil. From what I've gathered from talking with him, Mr. Franklin switched to BL pickups simply because he thought they were a great pickup. In my limited experience with the Franklin guitar, the BL pickups are what it seems to "want." Both of mine really opened up tonally when I switched.

Emmons clone? Hardly. I've had my Emmons Legrande and my Franklin completely apart and in pieces, and put each back together. Different undercarriages, different feel and sound, but each a great guitar. My Franklin is pre-Legrande anyway, so no chance it could be a Legrande clone, by the very definition of 'clone'. Of course, it's an all-pull design, so it's obviously very different from a push-pull Emmons.

I wouldn't remotely think about changing the original single coil pickups on my Franklin. They sound fantastic, don't hum badly at all, they are sweeeeeet pickups - ask Mike Sweeney, who had a chance to play mine while working with him. I'm a big fan of Lawrence pickups - I use 'em on a couple of other guitars - but if it ain't broke, I ain't gonna fix it.

To add to what Kyle posted about the pickups. Paul (Sr) told me he couldn't build a pickup as good as the Lawrence 705 and the reason he started using them.

Jack is right on about my LeGrande II and the 710's I have on my steel.
Shortly after I bought my new Emmons from Bobbe in 1999 I ordered the 710's and the tone did not change.
Jack installed them for me.
They are hot pickups and do need to be further from the strings though.

Chris,

I have long wondered who had my old guitar. I've had several fine guitars and I love what I'm playing now, but I sure wish I had kept that one.

Here's a picture of it when I was its owner.

just out of curiosity, if these franklins are the best steel made, why do some of you play other steels (rains) or sell franklins that you have?
if i had the best steel ever, that's what i'd play.
