I've seen the Lap Dancer replacement necks advertised, and I've often wondered why the sound would differ from a regular Telecaster with a riser nut. I think a large proportion of people playing lap steel do so by just putting a riser nut on a regular solid electric, or, even easier, which gives you a shorter scale, is to slip a 1/4" length of round stainless-steel bar under the strings at the second fret.

Here's Basil Henriques answer to that problem...

Sitting at PSG he has a Telecaster strung round his neck, which is fitted with MIDI electronics. I've never seen anyone switch so effortlessly from one to another, with almost no break in the music. In one number he'll play steel, jump to lead, and then add some synthesized MIDI sounds, and back to steel.
