Great news! Mr. Phil Cootnz is going to be joining us at our 2nd Annual Marshfield Steel Guitar Show on June 9th.

Phil is a top flight steel guitarist and has worked with several of the best in the Country Music business including Moe Bandy, Royce and Jeanie Kindall, and several of the Grand Ole Opry Entertainers. I have his CD and it sounds great!

Thanks Phil for joining us!

More great news!

Pastor Cliff Waterman and his wife of Kansas City are joining us on the 9th of June also.

Pastor Cliff is a really great steel player and has been playing shows and with big name entertainers as long as I can remember. He has done numerous recording sessions with singers and groups as well.

I am glad to have them on board with us.

We'll be starting at 10:30 and go into the evening around 9:00 or so. We hope everyone can join us.

This is going to be a great day for steel guitar.

Thanks to everyone who is helping us and GOD bless!

There are going to be a lot of good players on this show. Jimmy Burrell is the steeler for Heartland, the band I play with. He is great. You may have seen him if you go to the western swing shows held by the Western Swing Music Society of the Southwest. He is in their Hall of Fame.

Terry scored a coup in getting Don Helms to come to the show. I am very much looking forward to meeting a real live Drifting Cowboy.

A young steeler, Tyler Hall, is coming, too. I really enjoyed his set last year. He is getting some good reviews in other threads on the forum: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=109775

Rob Parker is also coming. He is a great singer. I have seen him at many steel shows over the last few years, and have always been impressed with his singing. I did not realize he played steel until the Marshfield show last year, where I was privileged to get to play piano on his set.

Jerry Roller is back from last year. The crowd sure appreciated him at the show last year.

Scotty Henderson, of the "Jazzabillies" fame, really rips it up and plays some hot steel. I am very much looking forward to his set.

Jack Musgrave is a great player and, above all, a good guy. I have had the pleasure of playing with him a few times over the years.

As far as I know, I have never met Ray Qualls,Dennis Detweiler, Phil Coontz, or Cliff Waterman, but I am looking forward to meeting them this year.

Come on out June 9!

Hi Terry: Your big up-coming Steel Guitar Show on June 9th, sounds really great. Wish I could attend this year, but I'll be busy with our family, celebrating our 50th Anniversary. Didn't think I'd make such a plateau in our lives. And I was playing steel guitar at least five years before getting married. I just bought myself an anniversary present from one of your Mo. Boys; Purchased a New RED Stageone guitar from Doug Earnest.. A really fine steel, licensed by "ZUM". I love it; great sustaining power and a smooth mellow sound; wouldn't know but you were playing a Pro Model from Zum. I hear they are selling like Hot Cakes.
Want to congratulate you on doing your Show in Marshfield on June 9th, Terry.. Its people like you whom keep Steel Guitar alive in America.. Keep up the good work. Is Austin Stewart going to be there? Now there is one fine teen ager whom can pick a Pedal Steel; enjoyed those clips on that Ozark Music Assc.'s Thread on Steel Guitar Forum.. Did you take part in that show, Terry.. Keep up the good work..Bernie

Hi Bernie,

Our show is really growing and it takes alot of help from others. I first got the idea for this about a year and half ago while playing at the 1st Alabama Steel Guitar Association Show. Anyhow, it worked so we decided to go ahead and continue it.

Next, the players have helped me the most. We showcase alot of players that normally don't play the big shows. I have been to the big shows many times and they are great, but we need the smaller shows to keep steel alive and it helps to incorporate and spread the word about all players. Most importantly, I think it helps to educated the public about steel guitar more so than larger shows. Because like here in Marshfield we get younger people and older people who still are just learning what a steel guitar is. This year's show on June 9th is going to be a dandy. We have alot of great steel guitarist playing.

Yes, I invited Austin Stewart twice and he can't come this year because his folks have him already booked at Coffeyville, KS at a show that evening. They say that two shows is too much for him in one day. We hope to get him on our show next year in 2008.

No, I have never been invited to play at the Branson Steel Guitar Show. Yes, I am a member of their association too. Well, I left the Branson scene in 1983. I was burnt out and during that time playing 7 days a week. I was the staff steel guitarist for both the Branson Grapevine Opry called The Starlite Theater and The Grapevine Opry of Texas during 1982 and 1983. Shoji Tabuchi was a regular and on the Branson show everynight. He didn't have his own show for a few years after that. The Starlite Theater also booked in alot of Hee Haw people. Shoji and I were and remain friends, and I actually rented his motor home and lived in that the summer of 1982. We fished together alot and I played steel guitar on two of his albums "Classy" and "Rove Retters," and he was on my first album titled "Me and My Steel in 1985. Incidently, Don Helms wrote the liner notes for my first album.

Anyhow, I left Branson USA and went back to college for a number of years, recieved my Bachelors of Science in Art 1992, and Masters in Art Education 2000, and Masters in Educational Administration 2005. I currently teach visual arts in the Marshfield pubic schools, and play music the way I like it these days. My wife and I have three young children and have decided to stay put in Marshfield because it is a great place to live, work and raise our children.

In closing, I think the steel guitar is alive and well. You should get a DVD copy of our 1st Annual Marshfield Steel Guitar Show July 2006. It is 2 hours and 38 minutes long and it has been edited so there is alot of playing and very little talking on it. The DVD features 10 steel players and is a great. We sell those for only $20 and the funds helps to bring people like Don Helms to our play our next year's show. You can order a DVD from me with check or money order at:

Terry Wood
312 North Walnut
Marshfield, MO 65706

In closing Bernie, I am already booking players for 2008 and some well knowns are on the list.

Thanks and GOD bless!

Marshfields' Gigantic Steel Guitar on June 9th-2007

 Hi again, Terry: Now, if the number 8 on your list doesn't draw in several more steel players and fans of our instrument; no one will ever do it. I have been a # 1 fan of Don's for many years; from his days with Hank, Sr. and The Drifting Cowboys. He was the man whom enticed me to take up the steel. Truly wish I could attend this year, but have previous committments. One of my first cousins is celebrating their 65 th Anniversary on the very day of your show.
Have you set a date for next year's show there in Marshfield? I've been attempting to persuade the wife into coming to Mo. for a couple of weeks vacation; Take in more shows in Branson; and possibly make a trip to your little home-stead of Marshfield, Mo., at the time of your 2008 Show. I'll work on the spouse during the coming months, Terry.
As we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary this summer, following it up with a trip to Mo. in 2008 would make a great grand Finale to reaching such a plateau in our lives.
Good luck with your 2nd. annual Marsfield Steel Guitar Show.. Keep in touch.. May The Good Lord Be With You and Yours, always..Warm Regards, Bernie

Congratulations Bernie on you and your lovely wife's 50th Anniversary. If you come to our show next year, I will play a special song just for you and her.

We are looking at the 3rd Marshfield Annual Steel Show during June, 2008. The reason for the month of June is last year we had competition on the weekend of July 1st with the local Rodeo, Will Rogers Indian Pow Wow and not to mention the 4th of July which is celebrated big here at Marshfield. We had former President Bush our current President's father here for a 4th of July celebration while he was U.S. President. Marshfield is a Great Americana Town and the American Spirit is alive and well here!

Also the end of May and Memorial Day Weekend is the big Tulsa Oklahoma Steel Guitar Show. So we try to work with these other great Steel Guitar Shows and not conflict with the Tulsa,OK, the Siloam Springs, AR and Branson Steel Guitar Shows. All are great steel shows and we need to all work together.

I wish they would have had these steel shows when I was a youngun' At that time only Scotty had the courage and perseverance to start a steel show. He was the first and still it is the largest steel guitar show. I am thankful for his hardwork and dedication. He will be performing at our show in the future. Last year he was in Ohio doing a show and this year he and the Great Doug Jernigan are up north in Canada doing a show. We hope to get both here at our annual steel guitar shows.

Hi Buddie, glad your coming up to our show this year. No one will be disappointed in this year's show. Don Helms is a Master Player, Showman, Gentleman and a true Living Legend of the Steel Guitar!

Thanks and GOD bless!

Hi Everybody,

If you are planning on joining us on June 9th it is easy to find.

Marshfield is about 25 miles of Springfield, MO just off Interstate-44. Coming from Springfield, turn at Marshfield exit and take a right turn onto the spur road, pass McDonald's, to first set of lights at the Kum and Go store.

Next, stay on that road and little further pass the O'reily's Auto store, the road has a Y, stay right go ahead on Jackson Street for several blocks until you come to a 4 way stop by the Ace Hardware, turn right pass Marshfield Police station and on corner is the Jubilee THeater and 2nd Annual Marshfield Steel Guitar Show.

I hope this will help as I have had several e-mail or telephone for directions. We start 10:30 sharp and last until about 9:00 that evening. The cost is only $10 for the day's events, and children 12 and under accompanied by an adult, get in free.

Counting today just 15 days to Steel Guitar Fun at Marshfield. Hope to see you all there!

THanks and GOD bless!

Oh boy Terry - That is one heck of a line up. And having the legendary Don Helms in the house - WOW!

David - you are in for a real treat when Ray and Dennis take the stage. Just be sure you are sitting down!!! Both are amazing players. And you will not find a more complex player than Dennis. He blows me away every time I hear him. And Ray makes it all look so easy!

Wish I could be there - I'll miss seeing and hearing Mr. Don Helms. I guess we'll pass each other on 24 as I'll be in his neck of the woods that weekend.

Have a great show and enjoy! Oh, and keep an eye on the Kid.

Thanks for the kind words, Lana. The major element of any show/jam is missing when you aren't there. Scheduling all of the new and established shows/jams is becoming tight. It's the hosts, like Terry, and Steel Radio that are keeping the players alive. And the internet is introducing steel guitar to many new followers. My sister and I are looking forward to the show.

Hi Everybody,

I have been away from the Steel Guitar Forum for a few days. As David T. mentioned I am in the process of finalizing everything for the June 9th Steel Guitar Show at Marshfield, MO.

This year's show is going to be a dandy. We have a great bunch of guys coming to perform. We also invited several others, but they had other engagments for this year.

Next, you might be surprised but I am already discussing and working on details with other steel greats for next year's 2008 show. It is alot of work putting these shows together. The reason that guys like myself, Ray Qualls, Larry Garrett, DeWitt Scotty Scott and others do this, is because we all love steel guitar and the players.

I most likely will not be on the Steel Guitar Forum eeryday now since I am getting ready for our show.

We invite and hope everyone can come on out on June 9th at Marshfield, MO. We will start at the Jubilee THeater at 10:30 sharp and end around 9:00 or so that evening.

Thanks and GOD bless!

We got a great show lined up for this coming Saturday.

Johnny Spaugh called me yesterday and he is coming to play with us again this year. Johnny and I recorded 3 or 4 CDs together over the years. He is one of the most knowledgeable guitarists that I have ever heard.

There are also several singers and players helping us out. It takes alot of people working together to make these shows successful and I appreciate that. Thanks everybody for your help!

GOD bless and hope to see you all on Saturday!

Hi Everybody,

Once again want to invite everybody out to our 2nd Annual Steel Guitar Show at Marshfield, MO this coming Saturday June 9th.

We start at 10:30 and lasts until 8:30-9:00.

I talked to Don Helms last night and he is preparing for the trip and our show. Don is a super nice person and a true legend in the music business. If you never heard or met Don you all need to come out and hear and met him. I have known Don since 1981 and his tribute to Hank Williams SR. is one of the most touching things that I have ever heard in all my 35+ years of music.

He knew and played music with many of the greats in the Country Music business: Hank Sr. and Hank Jr., Patsy Cline, Ray Price, Jim Reeves, Lefty Frizzell, Ernest Tubb, Ray Price, the Wilburn Brothers and Loretta Lynn and the list just goes on and on. His book titled "Settin' The Woods On Fire," is a treasure and he will autograph them and visit with you all. Just really an honor to have him with us!

We got a host of other great performers that day. You will hear some of the best steel players and singers around, including: Don Helms, Rob Parker, Scotty Henderson, Jimmy Burrell, Jerry Roller, Ray Qualls, Dennis Detweiler and sister Jeannie, Hank Ruf, Tyler Hall, Cliff Waterman, Jack Musgrave, with Gary Atkinson, Johnny Spaugh, Kevin Haffey, Jimmy & Toni Morris, David Tunnell, Leon Lindsey, Chester Wood and myself and others. There may be another surprise guest or two for the show too.

Hope to see you all on Saturday.

May GOD bless!

Terry is this at the same place it was last year?

by David Tunnell
Scott,

Yes, it is at the same place as last year.

I'm not Terry, but now that school's out, I don't know that Terry will be on the internet to answer your question.

And, for everybody else, here are the directions to the Jubilee Theater in Marshfield MO:

Take I-44 to Marshfield, MO (Exit 100).

If you are coming from the west (Springfield), turn right onto Spur Drive (Highway 38).
If you are coming from the east (Lebanon), turn left onto Spur Drive (Highway 38).

Follow Highway 38 east into Marshfield. It makes two turns and goes through a stoplight, but stay on Highway 38.

After about 1.5 miles, you will come to a 4-way stop. Turn right at the 4-way stop.

Go one block (you will cross train tracks). Then you come to a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 38 / A highway. When you are sitting at that sign, the Jubilee Theater is on your right. There is a parking lot on the west side of the building.
