I have a Super Pro, serial no. 16988, with an upside-down 1 (Maybe shipped on a Monday, or a Friday, or after a two-George Dickel lunch).
Would you be so kind as to tell me the year on this one? Seems early '80s.

Don't know how to load pics from phone to computer or forum yet, lol. But Amp serial number is 1644. A single channel I believe.

Lee, thanks for your input. Maybe. I'm not familiar with Sho-Bud serial numbers.
I could be wrong, but the way the number is oriented towards the end of the cabinet, like yours, seems like it should begin with the 1. And if it's the other way, the 8's are upside down. Try looking at the picture the other way—the 8's have a slightly larger loop on the top. Here, I did it and inserted it in the post.
And I've never heard of a Sho-Bud serial number in the 80-thousands. But maybe they changed the numbering scheme and it was the 691st guitar shipped in 1988.
Sure would be clearer if there were some 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's or 7's.
I await further enlightenment from the oracle.

I assume Lee is joking, the "1" is in fact upside down, which is kind of cool somehow.

Thanks to all of you and greetings from Germany.
Addicted to pedal steel since two years now I got my third one today. From what I have learned in this thread it should be a 6166 Super Pro #13949 (November 1978). Since I found it in Germany (the guitar was locked away in France for some years) I'm curious if there has been any appreciable export or just domestic sales in the late seventies.


For the records:

Model 6166 Super Pro, D10, 8 pedals 5 knee-levers, George L's Pickups, blonde, wooden necks, one mini-swith to shot it off completely might be added later, #13949.

It's amazing seeing all of this steel guitar history. Thanks for your research and record keeping.

I would love to learn more about S/N 1772, a rack and barrel S-10, with 3 pedals, two knees on the right, volume, tone, and coil tap switch on the deck. I bought it new from Manny's Music in NYC in 1973. It was a 21st birthday gift from my Dad and Mom.

I don't have the paperwork, and while I know when I bought it, I don't know its model number, when it was made, or who worked in the Sho-Bud shop at the time.










This steel has accompanied me on a lot of adventures. The guitar and original case are still in pretty good shape. It hasn't been played in a couple of years, but I'm going to add two left knee levers with Michael's parts, and hope that will change soon.

This is a Show Bud Professional that has been converted to a single neck and rebuilt by the one and only Ron Pruter. He did a very nice job restoring it. It is serial number 3321. Does anybody know when it was made? I have guessed that it was a 1973 but I am not sure.

Dan, I would put yours at about 10/05/71, model 6139.

Don, yours would be about 4/6/73, model 6143.

Best guess on both unless Gene chimes in with some hard data. Neither of these guitars were in my database so I have no further info on them.

A friend of mine stumbled across this guitar the other day and bought it...sadly, this pic is about the only thing that looks good, the guitar is in need of as full restoration.

Lee Barber, I was really hoping Gene would have posted a reply to your inquiry back in February. Considering the Pro III is the one I now own. Lol I’m having a ball with it, by the way. Learning something new every day. I took it to my dad’s a few days after I got it and set it up. He sat there and told me that he regretted getting rid of 2 things in his life, an orange Chet Atkins Gretsch and the Sho~Bud Super Pro he had years ago.

Black, Ali necks and BL705 Chrome pickups.
Here is a recent photo of it and it is not in particularly good condition but still playable... If I ever get it back it would be a candidate for a complete rebuild :-}
