How do you know when you have enough of nothing?

Let's see here:
Are we talking about NOTHING or something?
And, is it really true that "this sentence is untrue"?
People who know NOTHING about NOTHING want to know.

My old dictionary said nothing is the state of the nonexistence of anything.
So, if it has a "state" it must exist otherwise it wouldn't have a state.
It also has to have a state to not exist so that means it's something.
But if it doesn't exist how can it be something?
If it is something it is then not nothing.
If it is not nothing it must be something and it exists.

My head hurts.
I am also beginning to understand the steel guitar.

I got up yesterday morning with nothing to do and when I went to bed last night I was only half finished.

Recently, I went to Las Vegas with $750 in my wallet.
Very determined, I made up my mind that I was going to find that illusive, NOTHING.
Sure enough, I came home with it.

What is the sound of nothing and how do you know when you hear it?

It's been called the sound of one hand clapping....

I hear you.

There is no sound of nothing.
There is no sight of nothing.
There is no feel of nothing.

Nothing has no properties except for the lack of them.

But Alan, there is the smell of NOTHING.
I recently experienced it in a crowded elevator.
There was no sound, no sight, no feel, but I sure smelled the NOTHING that was in that elevator.
Can you explain this?

Have you ever been in a Samadhi tank? It's a tank full of salt water in which you float naked. It's completely dark and soundproofed, so it's about as near as you can get to complete sensory depravation. It's an eery sensation, and can send some people mad, so they have a microphone built into the cover in case you start screaming and they have to pull you out. When I tried it out about 35 yrs. ago it was peaceful, except that you feel like there's no motion but you are actually slowly floating around, and every so often a part of your body will touch the outside of the tank, spoiling the illusion.

Anyway, the reason I brought it up is because nothing, which is the complete and utter absence of anything, is terrifying. You lose all sense of security. It's worse than being dead because at least when you're dead you have no brain activity and so are not aware of the nothingness.

What about the feel of NOTHING?

Nothing cannot be terrifying, Alan, because there is no awareness of it. Wherever there is consciousness, nothing ceases to exist.

There is no feeling to "nothing", but that, in itself, is a symptom, in that you expect to feel something.

Exactly. Try to shed your mind of all thought. It's impossible, because while you're doing that you're thinking of shedding your mind of thought. If you really do stop thinking you lose consciousness. But even while we're unconscious we continue to think. Our conscious mind is only a fraction of our brain-power. The unconscious parts of our brain have to keep sending instructions to our body to regulate it. Otherwise we would stop breathing and our blood would stop circulating. Our blood temperature would go out of whack, as would dozens of other things necessary to keep us alive.

I'm one of those people who experiences what's known as "lucid dreaming." I can dream and be aware that I'm asleep and dreaming, so I can regulate what I do in some of the dreams. It's great to be able to do things that you wouldn't dream of doing while awake, knowing that there are no repercussions, and being able to just wake up if things go wrong.

Yes Roy, I too have never derived any pleasure from the banjo.
But, if they would allow me to use it for a bat at softball practice, I think I might like it a lot.
