Anything minus itself leaves nothing.

But is it really nothing?

That thing did not exist in obscurity. It came along with other things which continue to exist.

So, it is not true that you can take anything and remove it, and end up with nothing, since that assumes that nothing existed before that thing was introduced into nothingness.

Cosmoligy suggests that a state of nothingness has never existed, and is impossible to have existed, since nothing can come out of nothing. Steven Hawking is saying that something can have come into existence from nothing if, a6 the same time, an equal and opposite matter was created. In other words, at the time of creation, positive and negative energies were created which balanced themselves out. We exist in a situation of those positive energies, which can become matter. The universe must therefore also contain negative energy and negative matter. Fortunataly the negative energy and matter doesn't seem to be in our sector of the universe... :whoa:

Each view of a page in the topic boosts the view count. 159,000 views isn't so impressive when there are people who have been adding 2 or 3 to the count every day for years.

By Hawking's reasoning, there might be a positive NOTHING and a negative NOTHING which evolved from NOTHINGNESS.
And, all of this positive NOTHING is all equal to positive NOTHING __ all of this negative NOTHING is equal to all of this negative NOTHING.

"Things equal to the same thing are equal to each other" (Euclid) __ which is self-evident.
Then, might it also be true that if:

+NOTHING = NOTHING
and
+NOTHING = NOTHING
then
+NOTHING = +NOTHING or NOTHING = NOTHING

And:

-NOTHING = -NOTHING
and
-NOTHING = -NOTHING
then
-NOTHING = -NOTHING

All of this makes me arrive at the conclusion that NOTHING must exist, and there must be a mirrored NOTHING of the same NOTHING of which this topic is about.

Clearly Nothing goes on forever.

If you drop anti-nothing, does it bounce, or eat through your shoes?

This subject will be six years old in July.
Is anyone planning a celebration?
Maybe we could have a "Best of Nothing" posting.
Perhaps someone could do a documentary on it and post it on YouTube, which we could all copy and retain for posterity.
What joys await future generations. 8)

What number plus itself equals itself?

Let us call that number x.

Then x + x = x.

Subtracting x from both sides...

x = 0.

I beg your pardon Scott, but the painting on the left is of a polar bear fighting his way through a snow storm.
The one on the right is of an Hopi Indian washing his face in the Colorado River on the floor of the Grand Canyon at about 2 AM with a heavy overcast sky.

Think NOTHING of it Scott (as I know you will) __ glad to help. :D

There is nothing better than a nice wee kitten. No pic. required. You know it makes sense. :)

Arch.

Yes Archie, a nice black cat, like the one that Scott shows in a coal cellar in his right-hand photo.

The left-hand photo reminds me of the view in one of those oldtime fog storms we used to have in the Birmingham area before the smog-control zones were created.

A pedal steel is like a cow; it needs to be constantly milked. Those dangly levers are to milk it with. :\

When this Forum dies they will have to take out NOTHING and beat it to death with the same stick !!
