Yes,lacquer guitars look great...'til the bar dings,cigarette burns,finish cracks,etc,start showing up. Formica guitars are that way for a purpose. Tone? Check with BE,JH,or maybe PF.MD

I wonder if Del would make me an Antigua lacquer G2.

Form follows function, unless you have Stu's DR which justifies itself in its resemblance to my grandmother's table.

I think it was Buddy Emmons who came up with the mica idea--the first push-pull Emmons guitars were the first with mica.

I would trade my grey formica EMCI for only one other guitar, a nice black formica Emmons push pull, 1965-1968. If I would buy anything else, I would still keep my EMCI as a backup to play in the likely event that I would grow tired of the other guitar.

I have a white formica S-10 MSA. I gigged it about 2 nights a week for 5 years. It took spilled drinks, Mike stands knocked over on it. dropped bars. If I sneezed tobacco juice. Yes I chew on stage unless I am playing Gospel Music. Haul it set up with a cover no case. It looks just like it did when I bought it used 10 years ago. It may date into the 70's. BABY is pretty to me.

Are the steel guitar builders only using Formica brand laminate? What's wrong with Wilsonart brand laminate?

Polish steel guitars are covered in Plastikowy
Chinese steel guitars are covered in 吕氏英汉字典
Mexican steel guitars are covered in plástico
Arabian steels are covered in كرت إئتمان, لدائن بِستيك

Aluminum and titanium work well.

Then there is the "Blue Darlin" that has turned green. I never seen mica do that.
Only a couple of builders know how to put a finish on wood that doesn't fade or change color sooner or later.

Standard guitar players like it when their instruments get that way. Maybe steel builders should build new wooden guitars that are already dinged up and charge more money for them the way Fender does with Teles and Strats.

What a discussion!Betcha won't find this in mica!
It's my fourth build and after the second coat of
tinted urethane my tongue was hanging out as the
sunshine spilled through the window onto the
steel. No matter what it's made of ( love that
titanium/aluminum!}just play the thang and let's
all be friends!Life's too short .

It's obvious to me that formica covered Steels will not stand the test of time, just like this basic slab guitar didn't...
