I'd say stick to what you know. But if you want to try pro tools free you can still download it here:

Win 98 (wont work with win 2k or xp) http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/ProTools/

or if you have a mac

I use steinburg cubase for any recording I do and find it easier to use than pro tools and there are a lot more free plugins available. You can often pick up cubase on e-bay at a good price.
