WOW!!! I would like to thank each and every one of you for participating in this!!!! Ray is right on about Jerry Byrd. He was here at Renfro when the 1st show was broadcast from the "Old Barn" on Nov. 4th 1939. He was the very last of the original cast members of the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. And yes, Red Foley got his start here too.

Every year we do an "anniversary" show on the weekend of the 4th of Nov. Many of the past performers will show up. Jerry was always invited but could not make it for either playing engagements or health problems. But he ALWAYS wrote a nice letter that was read on the show. A few years ago, Jerry sent ine of his scrapbooks to Renfro for their archives. In it are photos, newpaper articles, advertizements, pay stubs, contracts, and some Jerry Byrd stories. It is a remarkable piece of history.

For the most part, we do keep everything traditional country, bluegrass and gospel. Just this year we added a new show called the "1939 Barn Dance", which is music of that era along with clothing and vintage instruments. No pedals on this show!!! Its a fun show to play and the patrons really seem to enjoy it. I have been here for 9 years now and have enjoyed every bit of it. The steel sits up front and with the material we play, stays pretty busy.

I do have to agree with Jim S., that we can't "pigeonhole" the steel as a "country only" instrument. I would like to see the steel promoted and featured in ALL genres of music. With the players and mechanics out there today, it is certainly capable!!! Don't get me wrong, I love country music and love what I do here, otherwise, I would move on!!!

If any of you get a chance to come by and see a couple of shows, shoot me an email 1st and let me know you are coming!!! I have met several forumites at Renfro in the last 9 years and looking forward to meeting some more!!!
