On the episode with Reba, the steel player was Donny Levalley who used to play around Dallas years ago although I haven't heard anything about him in years.

Laney and I were 'home alone' last night and tuned in a portion of Hee Haw reruns for the first time, and happened to catch the Holly Dunn song,,,,Man, what a band she had!!!!!...including Mike Cass on steel, and the song she did featured the band more than I could believe; it made me a fan of hers and even more of a fan of Cass....I've known what a fine player he is for a number of years, but I wasn't ready for what I heard from him last night. Like I've mentioned in other posts, I guess I don't get around much anymore, and some of the players I've been made aware of lately serve as a reminder to me of what wonderful steelers are still out there 'doing their thing'.
Way to go, Mike.

Russ

I saw the same episode and was wondering who that was playing steel for her. I also caught the one prior with Loretta Lynn from 1971. And Merle and a later one with Johnny Cash and another with Bill Anderson...

I saw my late buddy Randy Hauser behind Bill Anderson Friday night. Randy also played for Chet Atkins from the late 70's until his death in '97. Sure do miss that guy!

Hi Ken,
I also saw the episode with Bill Anderson and was wondering who the steel player was. He did some very nice chime work. Perhaps Russ could tell us who he is.

John,
That was Sonny Garrish on steel backing Bill Anderson. Pretty cool chime sound. It was enhanced by Steve Chapman on guitar. He was doubling Sonny's chimes with a muted unison part.

Donny was among those killed in the plane crash that decimated Reba's band many years ago.

I thought Donny was part of the old band that Reba let go just before the accident.

Hey, Dave! Did any of the Hee Haw steelers look like me? No? Good - then I guess it wasn't me playing ....
