I didn't get started with Jeff Newman, But I did attend his one week Teacher's course in June 1977.
Along with several of his 2 day seminars in London, Ontario, Canada.

Jeff, in my opinion, is the master of it all, he has it all together, A great player, a Great teacher, A great Guy, and an intelligent man, and shrewd business man. Smart move when he bought that farm.

It was quite and illuminating experience.! ........al

I didn't attend his college, but I owned two of his courses. "just play the melody"(which helped me tremendously in my chord progression) and "no speed limit". He's a very good teacher, and a great steel player.

"At the time I thought his right hand technique was awkward and uncomfortable, so I didn't learn it. But ten years later when it seemed like I couldn't progress any further, I went back and relearned the right hand, using his technique. And he was right!"

exactly what is his right hand technique? maybe that's what I need to do.

Yes, Been there and done that several times.


No one can touch him when it comes to teaching steel guitar. He can read you like an open book in large print.

He is amazing. Absolutley THE BEST, IMHO.

I have just recently been working with Jeff's Right Hand Alpha course and was so impressed with his style, knowledge and warm sincerity that I had already talked my wife into letting me start saving so I could go to his TopGun school. Sadly, the closest I will be able to get to the MAN will now be through his all of his courses, of which I now plan to buy.

When i started to learn i bought some of Jeffs tablature and some tracks . He was the best teacher that i have ever seen . Again he will be missed . But i wish his family the best of everything . I attended Jeff's week long college in May 79. I barely knew how to set up a steel then much less how to tune one. I too was overwhelmed, intimidated and wondered what I had gotten myself into; the pedal steel has to be one of the most difficult instruments there is to learn. Jeff was not only an awesome musician but he was truely a master teacher. I can still hear his voice and the look in his eye, he really knew how to touch his students. I'll never forget him, one of the most memoriable times in my life, he changed my life forever.
