I'll be glad to Give Mike What I have, but its distorted from being overdriven from the board, If he wants it, it is his to do with as he wishes. Thats the way I operate with all the players. I make no money off recording these guys and never will, don't even get expenses for what materials I use and wouldn't take it if it was offered, Its something I do for the players to show appreciation for them volunteering their Services to help the Shriners Childrens hospitals. The idea that an illegal copy floating around for everybody to copy is going to promote the Steel Guitar is Absurd.

Damn it! didnt you read my post! this is not about buying a BOOTLEG or ILLEGAL copy of Mikes' performance. Audio taping of anybody there or St Louis is Not, I repeat, NOT ILLEGAL! I doubt if anyone has spent the $1,000s of dollars I have to support any and all pedal steel artists. In pedal steel instrumental album I have over 175 , some I paid as high as $20 or more ea.
Over 400 legal , first run tapes of pedal steel, no copies. about 200 CDs , of which I always buy the tracks to go with the CD. Most all of B.E., Doug, Herby, Paul,Steve P.
Bobbe S., Tommy Roots, Joe Wright, J.N. ETC. courses (tab, video, tape) Do I have some copies of performances, Sure! doesnt everybody have a cpl that a friend gave them.
Chalkers live performce and other cherished memories. Now if anybody wants to come here and put thier $$ where thier mouth is , I will sell every pc. of whats in my collection and go out and buy myself a new car! especially since my sister just wrecked mine yesterday.( just Kidding ) not about the car ( she did ) but I wouldnt part with my steel guitar audio and video collection for anything. It's what keeps me sane, and you sure dont want me to go nuts! at least not more than I am already. Go get em Bobby!
Now SOMEBODY must have known how to make a good recording of Mikes playin' that they're willing to trade me for a copy of ANYTHING I HAVE. SHEEZZZ!
[This message was edited by SKIP MERTZ on 03 March 2004 at 07:29 AM.]

When a copy exchanges hands for anything of value it is illegal. I read you post, but eveidently you haven't read all of mine, Just because you have money in your pocket doesn't entitle you to what you want.
Lets drop this now, you have your standards and I have mine, Evidently you need help in finding some higher ones.

You've brought up an interesting point John. If it IS Legal for anyone to record and event by general public, completely aproved by the person sponsoring the event, I think you're correct in stating that the copy could be GIVEN away freely, but any exchange of any type, would be considered profitering.
I humbley submit to your apparent knowledge (and my lack of) in this matter. This is and was an important discussion that involes alot of mixed feelings , both pro and con, and is of course a matter of heated debate and court cases concerning downloading from the net or burning CDs and tapes. Thanks John for your input and thougts on this matter. I'm sorry if I have strained our frienship, SKIP

Mikes set at Saluda was truly eye watering. I only wish I had taken my recorder with me. Mike you gotta do a CD. I also had the pleasure of hearing Bobby Boggs play last Sat. night and it don't get any better. My idea of a dream jam would be Bobby and Mike set up side by side.

Guys,
Thanks for the nice comments, I really appreciate it.

Garland,
Thank you, you've been one on my hero's since the old Powdersville days. Im honored to carry your guitar anytime. When I tell that story I usually embellish it with " at least 2 foot of snow!!" Image

Skip,
I will call John.

Frank,
A head cut'in with BB is something I try and stay clear of. He showed me about half of the stuff I try to play.

Mike

Look guys !!! Mike did a outstanding performance. I don't blame anyone for wanting a audio copy . You know, there were times I missed Buddy Emmons at shows. Time moves on. Mike will be at other show. Just wait your turn.
Thanks Mike. I really enjoyed your show and I didn't make a tape. I will be back next time you are at Saluda. Hope you will make it to the Tri City Show in October.
Thanks
Bill

Hi Mike, it sounds like you did some kind of playing at Saluda. Do you remember who taught me John Hugheys intro and solo on "Look at Us" before I ever heard the record? Yep, you the man. It's been that long since I heard you play and I would love to hear something. Do you have a tape you might share with me? Not kidding here, I think about you guys at the Emmons booth often and what a great time we had in the jam room.

Ok to clarify my last post.Frank you need to read the whole thread.I wasn't within a 100 miles of Mike when this went down.Lucky for me. Image

Bill Phemmons, thank you for the kind words. It was a pleasure to meet you.Come back anytime.I hope to one day hear you play. BTW I enjoyed your singing.

Steve Gambrell, stop calling my house 24/ 7.I know Mike has made you famous. But I still don't want to be your roadie. Image

Mike congrats. Now maybe everyone has heard what I've been hearing for years. Frankly, I'm tired of it and would rather hear someone who plays worse than me.Not better. Image Keep up the great work. Ps I'd lose Gambrell.Mans a loose cannon. Image
[This message was edited by Bobby Boggs on 03 March 2004 at 10:24 PM.]

Bobby, calm down, man! SOMEBODY'S bound to buy that Zum Easter egg.
Seriously, when I decided to give the steel a try, it was Bobby Boggs who said, "Call Mike Bagwell." Bobby and Mike are BOTH world-class players, and are respected by the entire community, and admired by anyone who's hears them play! Now, Bobby, don't worry about your phone ringing. it'll be Cash Advance, or the power company, or (more likely) your Internet provider, asking you to pay the bill!
[This message was edited by Stephen Gambrell on 03 March 2004 at 11:14 PM.]

I have a solution For all of this and this time I'm going to give some advice, not make heated statements.

If everyones motive is ulterior, Why not dig into those deep pockets the some of you appear to have and offer some financial backing for Mike to put out a professionally recorded CD that is befitting a player of his stature.

Giving a player an opportunity to make some money off his instrument would be a stronger statement for the betterment of the Steel guitar than, grabbing a marginal copy of a Great performance by any means necessary to get a copy of his work.

If the betterment of the steel guitar is your motive, then put your money where your mouth is. There are some fine recording studios in SC, DR Bob Strum put out a great CD from one of those SC studios and the session players were marvelous. This way everyone makes a buck, legally, ethically and morally right and secure in the knowledge it was done right.

Mike and I discussed the quality of the recording I have of him and we both agreed that it should be destroyed to stop this bickering. It has been erased. It just wouldn't have done him justice for a distorted recording of a great performance to be out on the streets.

Another point I would like to make before ending this, is that if you have a portable recorder at one of the shows, Wouldn't it be more straight up to walk up to a player before a show and just ask if it is ok with him to record his performance. After all the performance is his property, any other way is stealing not steeling.
And that way in my opinion is for the betterment of the steel guitar.

I'm not sure Mike was aware that I was recording the entire show at Saluda and My apologies go out to him for not letting him know up front and why it was being done.

Things happen pretty fast for the sound guy at Saluda on Sunday afternoon and up to the point where he started playing I wasn't aware, that he was such a super player and a damn nice guy too. Now I know.

I've said it before and will no doubt say it again Saluda is full of Surprises and when you think you have heard it all Some Local guy will knock your socks off. It happened on my first show at Saluda with Joe Turner and its happened almost every show I've been at there since. Mike Bagwell was the latest.

Do you guys have any more suprises for me, Now? Lord I hope not, I'm getting too old for this much excitement. Image

John

Skip , We still luv you , even if you are a little weird and Misguided Image

Bobby, I were Mike I'd be mad at you too for Putting Gambrell Image off on me. Thats a Real dirty trick Image Image
[This message was edited by John Floyd on 04 March 2004 at 07:15 AM.]

First let me say I was just having fun with this. ImageI've known Mike for 30 years. We're kinda like family.I've heard him play at his best and his worst. His worst being very good.If Mike wants the tape destroyed that's good enough for me.

John,as for putting my money where my mouth is.Mike is not only a great steel guitar player. He owns a very sucessful business. He could buy us all out except for maybe Skip. One of his best friends owns a very good studio. So I have no doubt Mike could do 4 CD's a year if he wanted to.

The publicity from this thread would have to be a great sells boast.Only Robert Randolph, and Bobbe Seymour have had more.So Mike, if you have any desire to do a CD now would be a great time.I wish you would. But I'm guessing you want.I just know you that well.Anyway if you do. You have all my moral support. Image That's always a great help. Image As for money you'll have to get that from Steve. Anybody notice a pattern here, When I snapped at Skip, It only took 3 minutes for a response, But When I mentioned shelling out some money to promote a CD project for Mike, It took Over 3 hours for a response.

Somebody has started an ugly rumor about me having $$. Let me clarify, There's a big dif in Making a $1,000,000 and losing it. Hell, things are getting so tight, my cats' cat food is looking pretty good. Image I play for hot dogs on Fri nites, steel 1 hotdog, steel and guitar 2!, so I'm doin' OK. I'm thinkin' about movin' to the Keys and be a bigger bum than I am already. Look out Jimmy Buffet Image

Does this set a record for number of posts under "Buy and Sell," or does that record still belong to Harry Hess????
And, as an aside, I believe Bobby Boggs was the youngest steeler to play the Opry. Correct me if I'm wrong, Bobby---shoot, you can correct me even if I'm right!
