Nice meeting you on Friday night, Marty. I haven't seen you draw 'em out like this since the OTB days. Image

There was truely lots of great playing. Forgive me for stating the obvious, but you needn't tear down others to build up the legendary Lloyd Green. The thing I liked best about Lloyd's Friday set is that he played all country stuff.

Jeff Newman always talks a good bit, inserts comedy into the act, and always badgers the band. It's part of the act. First time witnesses always react as Marty's wife did.

Nice meeting you too, Ron. Go ahead, tell 'em I'm really a nice guy! Image
My post didn't tear anyone down in order to elevate another. It stated some serious observations about the direction (or lack thereof) and evolution of pedal steel playing.

It's not about who's a nice guy or who dresses a certain way or equipment choices or, for that matter, how 'tasteless' someone's show is; but about the nature of accomplishment and direction for the future. The pedal steel allow us to change pitch(es) while sustaining notes and chords. THAT is the fundamental point and THAT is what is taken to its highest form in LG's playing and THAT is what is being overlooked or underutilized by most of the other players. Tommy does it as well as anyone I've heard yet, but still...

I know it's subjective to a degree, "I LIKE to use the pedals only to change from the I to the IV to the V so I don't have to move the bar around."

Fine, do it that way; alot of us are interested in the musical advantages (or maybe uniqueness would be a better word) provided by the mechanical aspects of the pedals and levers.

, I heard fortynineteen steels with the same screechy or boomy sound and one that stood alone;
Man, I guess you must have had a hard time...

Theresa, I applaude you, also David.
Please, stand up against "steelguitar and music lover" that make it a pissing contest. Lioyd Green is a icon, I agree, but there are a few more.

Jeff N is an Icon in teaching and a true ambassador of steelguitar, and his aproach is nice to a lot of people. Maybe this is not realy your piece of cake, but this guy shure knows what he is doing.
Please keep this critic warm and nice Image

I just read my wife's post. I think she is the best. However in the heat of discussion she left off Maurice Anderson, Paul Franklin and a list of influences too long to name.

Marty, what is your problem? It is not so much your opinions that people take offense to. It's your offensiveness. I've seen many of your other posts and it seems that you get off on insulting and trashing everything and every one. And you get a kick out of it... How perverse!

I don't care about your credentials. I don't care how well you play, who you are, who you know, how much you know, or how smart or witty you think you are.

On a scale of one to ten I'd rate you a zero as a human being.

There you go! Now I've given you the opportunity to quote and trash me too! Just what you wanted!

There is a line uttered by Max Von Sydow in the movie Hannah and Her Sisters which states "If Jesus Christ knew what was being done in His name, he wouldn't stop vomiting for a week."

I believe that if Lloyd knew that his playing and style was being used to negatively reflect on the playing or tuning of choice of his colleagues and friends, he'd feel the same way.

Herb,

I also feel Lloyd, or any of the other players if they were in Lloyds shoes, don't feel very good about this post either.

"I'm sure you would be interested to note the number of email affirmations I've received on this topic; and not all from little jealous nobodies, either!"

So are you saying that some of the emails of support you recieved were from "little jealous Nobodies." Jeez and this from someone who gets offended at being called a guy!!!!!!
[This message was edited by Steve England on 03 September 2002 at 04:49 PM.]

Herb, I think this whole thing is more funny than anything else. I can't imagine that LG, BE, JH, or anyone else of that kind of caliber would possibly care what some of the nobodies on this thread happen to think of their playing. These guys have played the biggest venues, with the biggest artists, in front of thousands and thousands of people at times, and have played at the convention in front of the most critical observers on many occasions. I just don't think they would care.
[This message was edited by Jeff Lampert on 03 September 2002 at 06:37 PM.]

First od all, Marty, I don't want to get off on the wrong foot with you, so I'll state my opinion up front. I think you are a pathetic, ego-laden little(in every sense of the word)man, who is using the anonimity of this Forum to stir up controversy. I doubt if you even care what you write, as long as it stirs up somebody enough to respond. I doubt you are a boxer, a wrestler, a network administrator, hay baler, or anything other than a loudmouthed little(there's that word again)fellow, who leads a frustrating life, is henpecked, and picks up, and sells, beer cans for a living. Thank you.

Jeff and Stephen....posts like this are quite likely the reason we're seeing fewer and fewer posts by the truly great steel guitar giants. Thanks for your perspective.
One day this forum is likely to be another
Grand ole opry........lacking in any true substance whatsoever, unless of course, those who make it a practice to offend take steps to correct their own forked tongues. Such a shame!
"HUMOR???" that has to be explained is not humor!

Ray, you're absolutely correct. Marty shouldn't have started this thread, and I should not have responded as I did. However, after reading his previous thread concerning the C6 neck, and then this one, I decided to respond. My language, too strong, and I apologize. My opinion, my entitlement, and I will maintain it, albeit privately.
So Marty, when you read this, you have two choices. My e-mail address is given, feel free to communicate in private. But, please, do not respond on this Forum, since I WILL NOT reply. Ray's right, let's talk steel guitar.

You're welcome, Steve.
Feel better?
Glad to be of service.

As far as your comment that I shouldn't have started this thread; I can't imagine what you mean! Should I have all topics vetted with you before I post them? Should everyone?
Do you really have that kind of time on your hands?

Ok all you censorshit gestapo, here ya go!

A little reality check for Steve and his ilk!
Real excerpts from real emails I have received last couple of days (names omitted, some of them very high profile):
I enjoyed your critique post. I viewed it as your honest opinion, not something that anyone should criticize you over.
Every word you have said IS true, except we differ on the ratings … I do commend you for your courage and forthrightness in saying what you said… there is NOTHING wrong with pointing it out on an open forum… Thank you for having the guts to speak your mind…
I was most interested in your commentary…

You have guts to say the stuff you do on the Forum! But you handle it evenly. Makes for lively discussion!
Mr. Pollard, yes, I have read some of your posts and it is very refreshing to find someone who cultivates the ground they stand on and then stands there.
I admire you for your courage. MOST would not have had it. Look for some real "flames" if past history is any guide.
