Thanks Jesse, I have done a 24 1/4" scale for the 12-string with 5/16 stringspacing. The 8-string has a 23 1/4" scale and 3/8" spacing. I prefer the 3/8 spacing. However, I think I should have used a longer scale, but I needed the space for the "catfood" can, so I made the scale shorter. I feel this short scale make me a lazy player. Maybe its because I am used to slanting on a 24 1/4" guitar.

Wayne, I really like the sound of a big 20mm round bridge, but I have another 8-string lapsteel of unknow origin and I put an Emmons pickup on it. Now this lapsteel has just 2 mm folded sheetmetal with string slots and a straight edge for the bridge, and this guitar sounds great.
I also have a Gibson BR4 with a solid brass bridge and I think that bridge has the best sustain.
I could have easily put grooves in the 20 mm round bridge, but there is no need for it. The strings are attached so close and with such an angle, that there is enough pressure to hold them there.
The catcan is somewhat sensitive to sliding, because the strings are attached further away. But it does not slide while I am picking. And the bridge is also lying loose on the can. I could move it with a lot of force.

And listen guys! I am just experimenting Image
Please don't think I am an expert now, I am just playing around a little.
Of course, all questions are welcome.

Peter, I've used 3/8" drill rod stock (O-1) and heat-treat it to RC63. I do my own heat-treating. I'm going to try 1/2" as per your letter. I also make my own bars out of HC steel. I think they sound better than one with a coating of 'bumper chrome' all over it. Only problem is rust- you have to take care of them.

Dirk B, Musicians Friend sells a cheap ($80) Lap that's pretty good for the price. I got one before I started building my own. http://www.musiciansfriend.com #518800
