An interesting tidbit:
Spock's "hand thing" is a Judaic symbol; I'm not sure of the meaning, but I remember seeing it above the ark of the Torah in a synagogue I visited as a child. I also seem to remember an interview with Leonard Nimoy where he mentions this as the inspiration for it (both he & Shatner are Jewish).
On a Jewish 60's side note, the original Mr. Phelps from Mission Impossible (before Peter Graves; can't recall the actor's name) was an Orthodox Jew; he had to leave the show because he couldn't work on Saturdays!
