......Jody back to you...my W98 that my wife now uses, froze yesterday just like yours did that caused you to start this post. Nothing works, and a "wine" screen. Has to be turned on & off with the power switch.
When turning it on, it will scan and then load normally....but as soon as I start to use a program there is a mechanical noise from inside somewhere like a bearing is out...then the "wine" screen that I have never had before.
I'm just a "check the oil and fill the tank" computer guy, I have no idea whats inside that big metal thing!
Is it possible to have a "mechanical breakdown" rather than a software problem?
(by the way, the XP Home on my other computer continues to work flawlessly)

No one volunteered any help so I took the ailing W98 to the Gateway Service Center. It's a good thing too...It is the hard drive so they will have to replace it and all the original programs. Everything except the case will be new and just like it came out of the box originally.
Oh, by the way, when Gateway pulled up the paper work on this computer it had a three year full warranty on it that I had forgotten about, and it's good until January 18, 2003....so all the repair work and parts to make this thing new will be at NO COST! (Christmas came early)
[This message was edited by Gene Jones on 17 December 2002 at 12:26 PM.]
