The iRiver unit records in pretty much any level of compression you want, but typically I would record uncompressed (WAV format). It has an 1/8" stereo input with a nominal mike pre also an optical input, so your choices are open. In terms of transfer to the PC these guys are very, very fast and easy to use (after all, that's the main reason for their existence). They typically support USB2.0 or Firewire, which are really really fast.
