I've been wondering the same thing as Sam Minnitti, since I have one backordered through Musician's Friend. They originally gave June 13th as the expected delivery date and have now moved it to the end of June. I would really like to get mine as I have a couple of pending recording projects. I thought maybe Paul would know if Peterson has shipped any yet.

Thanks fellows for the "cents to HZ" relationship.

Have ANY of you folks looked at the Precision Strobe Tuner-PST-3? I have asked this before and gotten no response.

From all I can read and study, it appears to be even better than the peterson V-SAM. Check the following link and let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Tony,

Fellow steeler and forum member Leroy Sawyer just sent me a link from the Peterson forum with an update..basically there was a delay due to the fact that Peterson wanted to make the adaptor that comes with the unit able to work internationally..They said this has been taken care of and the unit should ship any day now. Musician's Friend is showing an updated ship date of 6/27, but hopefully it will be sooner.

Carl,

I remember seeing your post on the Precision Strobe Tuner a while ago, and was also hoping someone had checked one of these units out in person. Unlike the V-SAM which is a "virtual" strobe tuner, the Precision is a real strobe tuner, and the price reflects that as it is almost twice what the V-Sam costs. I would also like to hear a first hand report on this unit...but at the same time would have a hard time spending $450.00 on a tuner.

Dear friends I have had one of these ordered since the 3rd of March. We have heard almost every excuse in the book as to the delay. At first it was another month, then a few weeks, then three weeks ago it was any day now, now Randy Beavers tells us another month. I for one am going to stick it out. If for no other reason than to see how long it takes. If it really exists at all. My real worry is that the hold up may some major technical problems. If any one hears an updated release date please post it here, I could use a good laugh.

P Perry-be a little more patient-It is worth having so it is worth waiting (a little longer) for-I am sure that anyone who wants direct answers (when) can call or email John Norris-now that he has become a member of the pedal steel community-I am sure he is pushing to get the units out just as he did to have our needed features implemented in the tuner

I too have one of these backordered through Musician's Friend. Yesterday the availability date was June 27th. Today, June 27th, it has been moved to July 10th.

However, according to Petersen's website, the V-SAM is now shipping.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Tony Rankin on 27 June 2003 at 02:21 PM.]</p></FONT>

I'm going to stick it out also. With all the features it has I'm sure it'll be worth it. If for any reason it doesn't live up to our expectations, Musicians Friend will stand behind it.

I received an e-mail from Musician's Friend saying it was shipped today. If they run true to form, I'll have it by Friday.

Phil and Randy---have you guys heard anything on yours?

HELP! I'm confused. According to Peterson's web site the VS-II tuner has the pedal steel preset tunings. There's no mention of it in the V-SAM product description.

I see why you're confused, based on their web description of the unreleased VS-II, I'm confused too.
<SMALL>"The V-SAM contains the first ever tuner presets (E9 & C6) for Steel Guitar. " -John Norris on their forum</SMALL>
<SMALL>"and for the first time ever, E9 and C6 tempered presets for pedal steel and lap steel guitar" - their web page VS-II description</SMALL>

John Norris just posted info on using the V-SAM for Steel on their support forum. http://www.petersontuners.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=187

I suggest you ask this question there.

I received mine today! I've been playing with it and it looks like it's going to be the "cat's meow!" The preset steel tunings are sharp to me. This may be a variable with different guitars and their cabinet drop. The preset is at 09.8 cents sharp for the root note, i.e. E note for E9th or C note for C6th. I set my presets at 02.0 cents sharp for the roots.

Am I the only one to get a tuner last week? I've played with this 4 days now and it's knocking me out. The E9th and C6th pre-sets are right on the money!

I got mine. It is one great unit. I am truly amazed. I was with a guitarist this weekend that usually tunes with a tuner then tweeks this and that till he is happy. He tuned to the guitar temperment and never had to touch it. Randy you are right about the SE9 and the SC6 temperments, dead on the money.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by P Perry on 07 July 2003 at 05:18 AM.]</p></FONT>

On last Friday the tuners for my shop come in.I packet one out and use the settings for E9th & C6th to tune my Steel. This tuner is perfect.I put this one in my bag and drive
to a gig and used it again ...and perfect tuning.I used it on saturday and sunday again
by gigs .I must say this is the best tuner what was coming out for Pedalsteel.I will give this one never out of my hands.
Our fiddler used it too and was amazed.
I think its a lot money for a tuner, but I think this is a investment for a lifetime.

My V-SAM should be here in a few days from Musician’s Friend. I can hardly wait based on the positive feedback you guys are giving the unit.

I was a little concerned when I heard that Peterson announced the new VS-II shortly after they started shipping the V-SAM, so I contacted Peterson representative and fellow steel guitar player, John Norris.

He emailed me the following and detailed comparison of the two tuners, which I am posting with his permission.

It appears that for the most versatility, the V-SAM is the tuner of choice for steel guitar players.

I also gave him the link the Scotty’s site in case they are interested in showcasing the V-SAM in St. Louis this year.

Here is John’s email to me:

Dear Sam,

The VS-II will ship around the middle of the month.
I see you´re a steel player so I will first give you the basic differences
and then the diffences regarding steel guitar:
The basic differences are:

Selectable temperament presets:
VS-II=Yes (12) V-SAM=Yes (12)

Selectable temperament roots
VS-II=No V-SAM=Yes (12)

Programmable temperaments
VS-II=Yes (2) V-SAM=Yes (2)

Tone generator
VS-II=Yes (Passive) V-SAM=Yes (active - built-in speaker)

Metronome
VS-II=No V-SAM=Yes

Headphone jack
VS-II=No V-SAM=Yes

Thru jack
VS-II=Yes V-SAM=No

DC Adapter included (100V-240V universal)
VS-II=Yes V-SAM=Yes

Now for the steel guitar feature differences:

1. The Peterson V-SAM Virtual Strobe Audio Metronome -
Features for Steel are as follows:

Just Intoned E9 & C6 tempered tuning presets which are "root adjustable".
That means D9, B6, Universal type tunings etc. are also preset in the tuner.

There are 12 other temperaments in the tuner including GTR & BAS tempered
tunings as well as the common Equal temperament and two user-programmable
tunings for any off-the-wall tunings or to compensate for cabinet drop etc.
There is also a tone generator and a metronome included.

The V-SAM is an input-only tuner (output is purely a headphone jack for
audio tone generator & metronome).

This is the only tuner of its kind in the world, no other tuner has steel
guitar presets. It is the ultimate live/studio tool for the busy musician.

DC Adapter included.

Accuracy: 0.1 cent (compared with +/- 2 cents for other makes)

2. The Peterson VS-II Virtual Strobe Tuner -

This is an updated version of the previous VS-I (Tuner only).

Features for Steel are as follows:

It contains E9 & C6 presets but is not as flexible (no D9, B6 etc.) as it
does not offer the "root" feature, suitable for players who are settled at
regular E9 & C6 setups and just want to tune in JI in-line without having to
adjust anything on a tuner (on all other makes of tuner, the user has to
adjust for each note). The VS-II is also programmable.

DC Adapter included.

Accuracy: 0.1 cent (compared with +/- 2 cents for other makes)

This tuner will be officially released at Summer NAMM in Nashville this
month.

We have also designed a clamp to hold the tuner in position and out of the
way which fits anything from a MSA guitar leg to a mic stand, it will be
available in about a week.

Thank you for your interest in Peterson Strobe Tuners.

Sincerely,

John Norris

I have one on 30 day approval.
I think I'll be keeping it.

It's only been a day, still have a lot of experimenting to do.

The metronome "tap tempo/elapsed time" feature is really cool.
