Remember... a banjo is like a pimple.

If you pick it, it'll never heal.

Naked as a jaybird, playing in the winter snow,
He didn't have a stitch on, so he wore his banjo LOW!
That blue Kentucky moon, gave his cheeks a rosy glow,
And made everybody grateful that he didn't play the Dobro.

Thank you.

It's clear b0b :
likes long sustain
and hates short decays.

And he doesn't like TOO many notes too fast too long,
or at least not incessantly all gig long.

Well he WAS attacked by a state senator or some such,
weilding a banjo 2 feet from his ear at a charity gig.... for an hour
No escape, no let up.

Poor man has never been the same since.
Good thing he plays steel.
Solves ALL the problems at once. Image

Why David! Have you found yourself a Thai ghost-writer?! I've never seen such excellent spelling under your by-line...

Yikes you guys are BRUTAL!..

Give banjo its due.. its fast, percussive, adds intersting meter to a song in the hands of a good player.. I think of Take it Easy by the Eagles.. .. the banjo was PERFECT in that song.. nice accompanyment to the vocals, added some "toe tappability" to the tune..however, I'm with you guys .. to an extent..

I can't listen to it all day,NEVER been to a Bluegrass festival, but I think banjer is a nice addition to certain forms at certain times.. I used to play it too.. but I stunk so I quit and sold it!... bob

if i never heard a banjo, and wanted to know what instrument it sounds closest to, i would have to say..the snare drum...yep, hold on now....take a snare drum, turn it over, and you know that metal thing on it? start strumming on it...sounds exactly like a banjo...and whoever wrote me the nasty e mail, with all those misspelled four letter words? yes..the KINGSTON TRIO STINK!<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by George Redmon on 14 September 2005 at 10:39 AM.]</p></FONT>

I've heard the 5 string banjo is our country's only indigenous instrument and you guys are dissing it. Shame on ya'll! I hope you don't choke on your next slice of apple pie. Image

I play 5-string banjo too. I love bluegrass, and have since I was a kid growing up smoking a corn cob pipe in a dirt-floor shack in that great center of hillbilly culture, Boston. Image

I'm also grateful because it got me using thumb/finger picks after flatpicking guitar since my teens, and made my jump to steel much easier.

Hey, it's one thing to not like banjo and say so. I think we get it. I promise not to lock anyone in a room and force them to listen to banjo music. But I see no particular reason to hyperbolically [employing hyperbole - a figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect] diss it either.

Another thing - many people out there feel just the same way about pedal steel as banjo-haters feel about banjo. We all protesteth loudly at such ignorance. I guess it depends on whose ox is being gored, eh?

Of course, I personally think that practically anything that can make a note has some reasonable musical applications. And each of those things can be equally well abused.

Gary Lee - cool video. Image

Then why did he get a marimba?

To all my anti banjo friends out there that thinks a steel guitar and a banjo can't make great music together, must have never heard ,STEELIN'THE HITS with Mike Fried,Marty Rifkin, and Mark Switzer. They proved beyond a shadow of a doubt it could be done. I still stand by my opinion there is no such thing as a bad instrument ,if it's in the right hands. The steel guitar is my first love, but I love to hear ANY instrument that played by an artist that has devoted their life to it,and carried it to higher levels.People such as Buddy Emmons,Hank Garland,Buddy Rich, yes even Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas. And don't forget Earl Scruggs, all these guys were innovaters because of their God given talent, dedication, and hard work. The only differnce is,they chose different instruments.

P.S. J.W. I know we don't agree on this banjo thing, but still love you man, your a stand up guy and I like that. Just stay out of Va. and those drop thumb banjo pickers.

Jimbeaux you must stand corrected. No ghost writer.
Weilding was wrong, ( still is)
I before E except after c.
Wielding.

I think for b0b, the frequency range relative to decay is an issue.
The marimba is MUCH lower in general pitch then banjo.

And you have never seen someone
holding a marimba up close to the steelplayers ea,r
just cause you think it's so cool to do.

Personally I like banjo,
Seen Bela 4 times in one week.
and I am not particularly brutal... ( Bob C. HA!)

Just this is a fun pig pile to get on top of from time to time.

DO NOT LIKE TO COOPERATE, HEARING IMPAIRED,
REFUGEES FROM AN ASSYLIM , MOMMA DROPED THEM
ON THEIR HEAD, OR SHOULD HAVE...THERE IS A LOT
OF SOUNDS BETTER THAN A BANGER, COW MOOING,
HOARSE WHINNEY, GOAT BLEET, DOG BARKING, AND THIS IS A MUCH BETTER SOUND THAN A BANGER,
A JACKASS BRAYING.. WE MUST ALL PREY FOR BANGER PLAYERS ......

WHEN WILL THE BANGER EVOLVE INTO A BEAUTIFUL

J.W you'r right, there's no more beautiful music than a bluetick hound treeing a raccoon in an Alabama swamp,or maybe in your case a Flordia possum. Right?

One thing I've noticed about banjo pickers is they aren't as RUDE to steel players as some of you steel players are to banjo pickers!!!

As if marrying my daughter wasn't enough to get on the wrong side of me, my son-in-law took up the banjo! But gentleman that he is, he has always kept it in the case when I come to visit. A few more years of this, and I may stop calling him "what's his name". Image
