I have to go with Ricky on this one... "Farewell Party" by Jimmy Day... uh, I mean Johnny Bush will bring tears to your eyes. Outside the steel playing and the lyrics, I love the way the rhythm changes up on the chorus.

This wasn't a big hit at any time but you can't deny the song, the voice or the steel guitar pickin': "Sweet Thing" by Buddy Starcher. Sung by Steve Young with pickin' by the Big E. from Steve Young's critically acclaimed 1976 album Renegade Picker. A real gem that eloquently states what country music is all about.

Well, some of you can't count to 1, but I can (don't make me prove it) and it looks like Farwell Party wins.
Seems ironic that we'd leave a song about death for future generations. Always liked that one, but it's a bit morbid. 'Course I see the undertaker liked it.

Death by Committee here...
I don't think it could be done, to sum up one song that would "BE" Country music for all generations to come. What are we looking for here? Sad, "I've lost everything," music? Love songs? The occasional "I'm actually happy with my marriage and life" songs? Songs about that "good ole country" way of life? the "I've got a drinking problem and I don't care if everybody knows about it" songs?
If you ask most kids my age, they'd probably spout off something on the order of Pat Green or Charlie Robison. The kind of kids that haven't ever HEARD of Randy Travis, Vern Gosdin, or Conway. I'd be willing to wager that everybody on The Forum could give a half dozen each for every category above.
So, the answer is, "It depends." Myself, I'd include something with the good Pedal Steel in it, so take anything from any Conway or Vern recording, and toss it in. I like 'em all.

This is a hard one,so many wonderfull country songs that live in my memory but I think I'll go for "Don't let me cross over" by Carl and Pearl Butler. Killer song and as country as they come.
