Garth tried to have his home in Goodlettsville declared a sort of Grace Land.
The neighbors gave him his privacy while he lived there and are up in arms with his desire to now make his Goodlettsville home some sort of tourist attraction. What an ego. He is entertaining but sing...nah. I've heard Elvis and he's no Elvis.

It's true he's helped the country industry! Theresa
Yeah! I've always thought he was over-rated.
But, he can sell records and he puts out good records! T
[This message was edited by Theresa Galbraith on 18 October 2000 at 04:42 PM.]

Well, I didn't care for it when he smashed the guitar on stage.

But he did hold the door open for me at McDonalds a month or so ago.

Nice enough guy. I liked his early music.

Too bad about the divorce.

"Show". There's that word again. I fail to see why people want to see costume changes, fireworks, flashing lights, etc. I just don't understand. It's supposed to be about the music, right?

But I can put up with that. What irritates me most is when a "musician" destroys an instrument on-stage, in the name of putting on a "show". I just don't see how a true musician could ever do that. To me, it's almost the equivalent of a Christian who would stomp on a Bible. (end of rant)

Show?? Image I have not seen him live since he decided that he had to put on a show. The concerts that I have seen on TV are anything but a good show. Smashing guitars and running at full speed from one end of the stage to the other is not what I consider a good show. Doesn't take much talent to put on that type of show.

Blame the guitar-smashing on Pete Townsend and Ritchie Blackmore.

Theresa,

I guess I should come to Garth's defense here. He received quite a bit of angry mail about that incident. And one guy even suggested (quite appropriately) that instead of destroying a guitar, he should give said guitar to somebody who could then learn to play.

He got with Takamine (I believe) and arranged for guitars to be given out.

Sorry for so few details. I tend to forget them. But a friend of mine dug up this info somewhere on the net (an interview, I think) for me a few weeks ago. I had (surprise!) been expressing my disgust at musicians who smash guitars on stage.

Just goes to show you, I guess: instead of ranting/raving about it (like I tend to do), send out a letter with reasonable alternatives. (I had had the same idea that this gentleman suggested). Even the stars are often willing to listen to us if we can get past our anger and express positive suggestions.

Wow, I didn't realize the word "show" would elicit such a response. Garth Brooks is an entertainer more than he is a musician. There are lots of entertainers that I don't care for at all. It's a matter of taste.

I wouldn't pay to see him, but his performance on Austin City Limits was pretty good. It's nice when you can turn down the volume and just read a book or something, looking up every now and then. He doesn't sound all that bad at low volume, but he's ugly to look at.

I wouldn't say "ugly". "Goofy" is a better description, IMO.

You don't have to be the best singer or musician in the world to be a good entertainer. Image

Who gives a rats @$$ about a few Jap guitars?
Its not like he's walking up to a Sho-Bud and beating it with a sledge hammer or any thing like that.

Maybe the time has come for Garth Books to ride off in the sunset. I certainly hope so. I have never bought one of his records, and I turn the radio off or down when he comes on. I can't stand to watch him and his singing is worse. When I have to play one of his songs at clubs, which is seldom, I just let the others take all the lead breaks and fills. I don't know any of his songs in the first place and don't want to learn them either.
