I was just listening to Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Jay Dee Maness's tone on You're Still On My Mind and LIfe In Prison is another great example of the kind of sound I'd like to get (don't know what kind of steel that was). It's not a really bright sound... I'd describe it as a "lighter" sound as opposed to the fatter sound that I think of when I think of Emmons steels.

Well I just put the new Bill Lawrence 710 pickup in a sho-bud the other day and OMG; this is the best sounding pickup I've heard; and after restoring hundreds of pedal steels in the last 25 years; I've HEARD them all. The new 710 comes with around 18,000 full and there is a coil tap(red)wire that is 9,000 ish...and it is the most useable coil tap sound I've heard. This is two rows of very good magnets blended together, that makes it a HUMBUCKER; but the most lively sound, one wouldn't think you would hear, unless it's a old single coil pickup....
This new 710 is the display of sound me and the late Jerry Wallace(rest in peace jerry I miss you) were getting from his TrueTone single coil; we attempted 5 to 6 different windings to finally get the TRUE OLD Sho~bud sound; and this new BL 710 has it and it's a humbucker OMG, and the most quality real and retro sound....BAM!!!! You wanna know how much I like it?? I just ordered one for my myself and I will put it in to replace the best sounding Personally wound Sho~bud pickup Harry Jackson did for me long ago and of course sounds wonderful with my LDG...but what I'm hearing out of this new 710......well I GOTTA Have it man...ah...ha.(besides; Lloyd Green has one in his LDG..ha)

Ricky, that sounds great. Would that fit in a BMI?

Where do you typically put the switch for the coil tap? My guitar is completely metal, so I can't really drill a hole in it.

Hello Ricky, can you maybe tell a little bit more about the experiments with Jerry Wallace? Like which variables were involved, number of windings, maybe winding patterns etc.?
