I think most suggestions and indications of what BE did or told are true.
ONE stands out though: Over-use, mis-use and abuse of volume pedals.
Too many who started on E9th (NOT coming from a non-pedal or "Swing"-tuning into E9th) have lost all "attack", dynamics and right hand expression. They can't seem to play ONE not without subconsciously cutting and pumping that pedal.
I must admit I came into the habit too and only after coming back from years of playing "normal" guitar (evidently without a volume pedal), I realized how bad a "habit" I still carried.
I unplugged the VP and kept it under my foot... playing direct. I was still cutting-&-pumping, but my right hand quickly "learned" to "drive" the volume, tone and attack. I think that unless I'd be recording or playing on stage ever and needed to control presence or set-back (GENERAL Volume), I won't uses a VP again... to the point I am considering adding a RKV or maybe a set of pedals for the right foot (a horror proposition for most any builder)... and then, I insist on learning my single note playing without pedals... well, with the exception of the "7th"-pedal (C6th)... to repeat the tuning 5, resp. 7 frets apart from non-pedaled.

We know Erv, she's been offering both your volume and the gas pedal here on the Buy & Sell section for years under the pseudonym "Muddy Lemons".
