It may depend on what guitar you play too. To my ears, you can't get the pop and crack in the attack on a vintage ShoBud without picks even if you can otherwise get a beautiful tone without picks.

I've seen Emmons play without finger picks, and a few other players as well. So I know that it's
possible. The thing I haven't seen is a pro,
any pro, continually play without using finger picks. I'd try many different picks so as to see if some are more comfortable, and also go out and see some players and make sure you're forming them properly. Ask them what they use, and then you can see and hear, up close, the sounds they make and the way they hit the strings.
Picks
aren't absolutely necessary, but probably 99% of players believe they are. I figure there must be a reason. So I'd say give it a real honest attempt before you cast them away. To help you get used to them, wear them when you're not playing.
