There's some good detectives in "The Great White North." This thread is crazy! You had me with Bill H., because his technique looks flawless. Then Bob Lucier blew his cover... good work guys.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread but Ian Tyson's name rings a bell with Buddy Cage's career. Didn't Buddy play steel with him at some point in the 1960's?

Hi Jeff. Yes Cage was in Ian and Sylvia's band the Great Speckled Bird and appeared regularly on a weekly TV Show with them. Check out their 1969 album called Great Speckled Bird.

It’s a great record and quite hard to find in vinyl. The band consisted of Buddy Cage on steel, Amos Garrett on guitar, N.D.Smart on drums and Ken Kalmuski on bass, well worth a listen!

I think it's called The Festival Express in 1970, when Ian and Sylvia along with Grateful Dead and other groups played in Canadian cities. Garcia heard Buddy play and asked him a few months later to join the New Riders.

I was just Listening to Jesse Winchester song 'Bowling Green' and always loved that album, and checked to see who played the great steel on it , and it was Ron Dann.

I did a couple of sessions on drums with Ron Dann away back when, probably about ‘75. Great player.

I knew Ron in Montreal in the 70's and that doesn't look anything like how I remember him. Are you sure that's him?

It was Bill Herchuk you see in the Tyson video, but Ron that you hearing playing on the track, is what we figured out with help from a "who's who" of Canadian players.

I remember Ron telling me once that his favorite steel player was Weldon Myrick. He spoke of him in very reverential tones.
