Dickey is not underrated, as much as he is under known. Amoung the people that knew Dickey and his music he is well appreciated. It is those that are unaware of him that are at a loss.

The first time I saw Dickey play was at the St. Louis convention, probably early 2000's. I didn't know who he was, but when his time came to play, with Jake Hooker, I noticed the auditorium filling up. I noticed Johnnie Cox pulled up a chair just off stage and other well known players coming in from the vendor rooms. It seems that I was the only one who didn't know who Dickey was. I was indeed blown away by his stylistic playing. Standing room only.

Hey Donny, on that snow tune that you posted the solo is sublime!
Every time somebody posts about Dickie I have to chime in. He's probably the greatest "non-Nashville or L.A." picker. The control, tone, feeling and interesting note selection is off the charts. I know he did take a shot in Nashville and played with some road bands, but I think he mainly played in Texas. What a wonderful player!

I listen to Dickey more than any other steel player. Thank God he recorded all those great Heart of Texas " label records with Amber, Justin Trevino, Jake Hooker, Bobby Flores, Daryle and Mona McCall, .etc.. It's a treasure trove of masterful E9 playing . I learn something every time I listen to him.

I really enjoy this performance, I'm fairly certain it's Dicky playing steel.
What a monster on the steel indeed! Pure talent and heart bending those strings!!

One of my most favorite albums ever was Milsap Live, which featured Dicky...I always loved the steel, but I fell crazy in love with it at that time...thank you, Mr. Overbey!

Felt I just had to chime in here. Was fortunate to have been up close to his playing one time; in a little music store in Florida, he had a little black Bud and played there for probably 2 hours solid. Never seen or heard anybody play like that before or since. .. .. When he sat down behind that steel, it was like he became one with the instrument itself. Awesome
