Yea Billy, it's a blue maple mica. Mullen also has a blue burl mica that looks similar to the blue maple. I like the Blue maple mica better than the blue burl. It's just purtier to me. Image

Six Mullen rigs from Lacquer to Mica, SD10's and D10's, one SD12. Pickups used in mine have to be tailored to the guitar because no 2 rigs sound alike with the same pup in it (at least to my ears anyway). Geo L's, Jerry Wallace, Mullen, Bill Lawrence pups are used in mine. Don't know how to post pics on the forum. Why 6? They just fit, feel, and sound good (not that others don't. Personal preference). Bought 1/2 of them from forumites. But I wouldn't mind owning a couple of other brands if the opportunity came along. Stay on the forum long enough and you'll see all brands change hands at various times. Several Mullen rigs came available and I bought them. Get yourself one.

I have two of them. Did have three. I would like to relate a story about the one I no longer own. I bought if from someone off of this site. It was located in WS I believe but he had purchased it from someone in TX. When he sent it to me it still had the TX address on it and for some reason it got sent back to TX. They refused the guitar and it was sent back to WS and then to me here in KS. I set it up and it was still in tune. Now I am not saying it did not need some tweeking but it was playable as it was. WOW. I was impressed.
By the way my picture is on the Mullen site with my three guitars. I now have the one with black mica and a laquer one that Del made for me with a special color. Kind of light brown.

I been playing mine over four years now and I am very very pleased with it . I have the sound that I want. And it holds up real good traveling up and down those bumpy roads. Mine is all wood.

May as well chime in and brag how much I like my 1991 D-12 rosewood mica guitar. Really has magic tone. Great action. Brilliantly engineered, everything fits and works perfectly, very classy, professional undercarriage. I've been checking out many makes under the hood lately, only other brand that I feel is as good mechanically is the Zumsteel. HOWEVER: as yet Mullen doesn't offer gauged rollers as an option, or as a standard feature. I'm working on them to do so, it's a bad problem on a 12-stringer. Other than that, it's fabulous!!! Stephen, they do sound great through a Webb amp; well, ANY guitar sounds great through a Webb.

I bought mine new in ' 03, crazy about it. Great steel, great folks to do business with.

Charlie : which p/u do you have in yours. I asked Del to replace the stock p/u's in mine with some wound like the ones in Buck Grantham's and Del obliged. Now it sounds great (to me) and would sound greater with Buck playing it. Image

I'm fortunate enough to own a 90s, sunburst, lacquer D-10, 8 + 8 with "mother of toilet seat" striping. Very responsive pedal and lever action. Supposedly the guitar was finished at the Gibson factory & belonged to Junior Knight for a short while. Mr. Wayne Pauly sold it to me a while back; it's resting in China now. Only one wish: that it had the guaged rollers, steve t

All kidding aside, I often wonder how someone w/ a $4000 guitar cannot know what the sticker on the front apron says. I know the originator of this post dosent have a Mullen, but I've seen it done.

"I've got this killer black Mullen for sale!"

Didn't he used to play for the Golden State Warriors?

All kidding aside again, and to contribute to the thread, I have a Mullen and it is an absolutley awesome guitar. Beautiful to play, hear and look at. Plus, Del and Dixie and all the folks that make these guitars are just top notch. I met them and their grandkids (who work there building steels) and they were very friendly and nice.

If some reason you would replace the pickup on the Mullen from a single coil to a humbucking, which one would you use?
Is the stock pickup that bad for it to be changed out?

In my experience here building many guitars, the most popular humbucker is the George L 10-1. I think it works best on the R.P. The main reason for switching to the humbucker is to eliminate humm, especially in recording situations. However the single coil pickup offers a beautiful punch. There are so many combinations of pickups and amps, and I encourage those who want to seek out their own tone.

Billy, if your gettin the RP model then I think you will be happy with the stock pickups. My D10 RP has the stock pups on it and the tone is as good as any guitar I've heard. I don't know about the Herby Wallace model. But if you happen not to like the stock pups you might want to try a True tone single coil. A friend of mine has a True tone on his 94 D10 and it sounds great!
Let us know how you like your new mullen.
That black maple is gonna look great on your SD-10. That was one of the colors I had in mind when I was goin to order myself a new SD-10. But I saw this D10 Blue maple that Hugh Jackson had for sell on the forum, and I only had to add about $300 to get it. So I canceled my order for the SD-10 and bought Hugh's guitar. Glad I did because I'm really enjoyin this C6 neck. Image
