<SMALL>Why anyone would resort to hate-mail over opinions on steel guitars is a complete mystery to me.</SMALL>
Me too. Allow me to share a little story with you.
Before the Internet was a general public phenomenon, the steel guitar community was bound together by newsletters and magazines. At one point, I wrote a letter to the editor of Steel Guitar World, and it was published in the magazine. The letter was in defense of rock and blues steel guitar.
A few weeks later, a very nasty unsigned letter appeared in my mailbox. It was an actual death threat from a steeler who disagreed with my views. He blamed me for the demise of traditional steel licks on country radio, for "new country" music, and (it seemed to me) for undermining the moral fabric of our great nation.
Some people can shrug off such attacks easily, but I'm not one of them, and neither is Carl. I was severely rattled, and I tempered my rhetoric for a while afterwards. My views about steel guitar didn't change, but my view of the steel community sure did. We are much more diverse than I had previously imagined.
My point is that Carl's decision is the direct result of similar negative feedback he received from this same diverse community. Like all of us, he wants to be accepted for who he is in all social venues. A few people here don't like him, and made life very uncomfortable for him. I don't blame him at all for leaving, but I sincerely hope that he will return.

Cor don't go, let the water run off you like
off the proverbial duck's back...
No matter where we go in life we will find people whom we dislike,
or dislike us. This can't be avoided.
But it does no good to miss out on meeting with those we are compatible with,
just to avoid occasional interactions with those we would otherwise avoid.
Only you lose in that scenario,
and you let them beat you....
So just tell those who harrass you to "sod off",
and go about your bussiness where you choose.
Curiously, I did a Google search of "Christian Steel Guitar Bulletin Board"
It came up :
" Where is Carl Dixon ? - The Steel Guitar Forum -
... edit I am happy to report that Carl is alive and doing very well over
on the Christian Steel Guitar Bulletin Board. The climate ...
steelguitarforum.com/Forum5/HTML/008494.html - 32k "
I also did a search of variations of my name... and came up blank.
I guess I can go job hunting if I want to now!

I heard a funny comment today by none other than Jeanie Seely on WSM this morning. She said she was never offended because she didn't care what anybody elses opinions of her were. That's not bad medicine. There's no point in worrying about something you have no control over. You may get your feelings stepped on but you have to move on and get over that. As for being offended, in these politically correct times we live in I can't wait until that phenomenon plays itself out for good. It's gotten to the point it's affecting (not impacting) everything from the way we address each other in the workplace for fear of a sexual harrassment charge to the very way our government operates right down to the they're execution of the war. Come on back Carl and tell em to kiss off. They'll just have to get over it!

There certainly are people -- including people like b0b and Carl Dixon -- whose poor opinion of me, if they had one, would trouble me greatly; but others whose poor opinion of me could only make me proud. You just have to always "consider the source."

There's a big difference between opinions and threats. I can usually handle whatever anyone thinks of me, but I don't respond well to threats.

Anybody hear from Bruce Bouton lately?? And Cor, if YOU leave the Forum, how will we know how the dispute with Emmons ends?
Just like a movie, night club, or ball game, we ALL paid to get in here. And, we are free to get up and leave if the movie stinks, or our team is losing, or the band's too loud.
I've gotten hate mail from a VERY prominent member of this Forum--who cares? I told the truth, as I saw it. I'm still here, and so is the other person. I miss Carl's knowledgable posts, but I've been in contact with him, and he assured me, he's doing fine. And so is this here Forum.

Anytime anyone knowledgable gets run off it`s a drag. Even worse when we drive off someone as generous with the advice as Carl.

Am I the only one on this forum who's never gotten hate mail?
With all the superfluous nonsense that I've posted over the years, I've never even received a simple... "pi$$ off"!
That's it! I'm leaving. I'm gonna find a forum where I can really be hated!

I have not been on this forum very long, and have not posted very much. But I hate to see anyone get flamed for their opinion. I am 62 years old, spent over 20 years in the military defending the rights of people to have their opinions and express them. I have only been playing steel for 1 year so I don't know you fellows very well, but from reading the post I would say we are all just steel players trying to keep our music alive, regardless of the type of music. Let's respect each other and their right to speak.

I just read an old thread about the history of the E9th tuning. I swear, when I read Carl's story, written in "hillbilly", I almost split my gut laughing. If someone were outside my door listening, they might have thought I'd done went absolutely hysterically mad. That man not only knows his instrument, he knows how to spin a yarn better than anyone I've read in quite some time. He'd rival any storyteller in this century.
Mr. Dixon, if you're reading this, please come back. We need you. Don't let the b*stards get you down. Too many people here want, love, and need your wonderful stories and keen advice.
I can't speak for all here, but I have a pretty good idea that I'm speaking for most...

Kinda like saying "Debate the issues, and not the personalities". Shucks, I'd even like for the political candidates to do that!

Hello All,
Donald Long wrote"I never was offended by Carl's wearing his philosophy on his sleave, because Carl never tried to convert me to his way, only offered it". That's just the way I see it and It is an admirable trait.

Any time you let a person with a different opinion make you quit doing what you love and what people respect you for, as most of us do Carl on here, you are letting that person or people control you life.

I miss Carl's comments. He has such good insight and and--------awe heck, it's all been said fifty zillion times already, ya'll know what I mean! HA!! Carl will come back when he wants to and is ready. Maybe he wants a little time to chill out a little---good for the soul! I believe that he is seeing all the friends he has in the steel community, and that out weighs some negative that we all encounter occasionally. I hope no one stays away because of anything out of line, negative, and not of the best interest of our fellow man. Life's too short for that sort of crap. If those incline toward negativity would channel that energy into practicing their steel guitar------------

I wrote him and let him know how much I value and appreciate all he's had to say and inviting him back, and received a very nice reply. I'd encourage anyone who's appreciated Carl's input over the years to do the same.

Every man's opinion is truly his own. No one
can or should argue about what you do or don't like. Unless your trying to force your
opinion on someone as law, I say speak freely
and I will give you my respect for your own
ideas. Even if it's the stupidest thing I ever heard.

Yes I miss Carl too! I can't imagine what goes on in somebody's head to launch a personal email attack? That seems really cowardly to me. I had a couple nasty ones waiting in my inbox about the jazz tune I posted here a year ago. Even though I wrote them off as idiotic, it still makes me think twice whenever I voice my opinions here. Come back Carl!!!
