Thanks, all!

Larry, I remember the 1964 Plymouth Valiant.. with the pushbutton shift on the dashboard!
I think I had whipped cream album too. I thought the cover was a little strange when I was young, but by the time I was a teenager I was amazed at how interesting it had become!

I really enjoyed the surf tone you were going for. Nailed it. Going to have to try a pick now. :D

Thanks Steve and Andrea, I had a lot of fun with this one. I like playing with a flatpick occasionally. The flatpick adds a certain "snap and pop" that's missing with fingerpicks. Works well for some songs.

I missed this the first time around, and sort of came across it by accident. So glad I did! I'm enamored of your tone and playing on this. Great job. I'm always looking for a good example of Supro tone (not too distorted). Wow---that's a big sound. Thanks for posting your signal/effects chain and recording particulars on the 'tube. I think I want a string though Supro!

Thanks guys, yes, this little student model really growls! It's just a plank of wood with a crappy finish, short scale, one control (volume), no tone control, chipboard case. These sold for about $30 in department stores in the 1950s. That would probably be about $250 in today's money.

I think the Valco string-through pickup has a lot to do with the sound. A couple of things: I installed Rick Aiello's magnets in this guitar. They tend to bring out more mids and fatten up the sound a bit. The guitar did sound good and strong before I changed the magnets, but Rick's magnets broaden the tone somewhat. This guitar originally had a single magnet and a "dummy magnet" (a wood piece painted grey). Valco went to the single magnet in the late 50's, evidently to keep costs down, and the guitar sounded fine with a single magnet. Also, I'm using a Boss delay and quite a bit of reverb. Thanks again. 8)
