While listening to "A Fallen Star" by Jimmy Day, I noticed his vibrato starts from his very first attack, and it sounds soooooooooo good!, not amatuerish at all!!! 
Saw Jerry Douglas last night on PBS. He typically moves to the note, delays slightly, then does a very short, rapid vibrato .. sliding of course since he really can't roll the bar he uses.
