I don't think that using your fingers bare without picks will handicap your technique at all once you get used to it. The tone will be different, but that's fine. You might end up with peeling callous problems on your right hand fingers, but that can be helped too. Stevie Ray Vaughan used to glue his fingertips back together with superglue when needed.
