Combo here.
Regarding the volume, I haven't played it on a gig yet, but at home it's seems plenty loud with the both the Gain & the Master at only about "11:00 o'clock". I'll know more when I take it out on a gig, but that won't be for a couple of weeks. On my Steel King I usually set the Gain at 12:00 and the Master at 1:00 on gigs. I'm gonna try that on the bandstand and see how it goes. There is also a setting on this amp to run channels 1 & 2 together, which is louder.

Doug, great to hear you got it and are liking it so far.Use both channels and you will see a nice boost over the single channel.
Jim,thank you for the kind words. All I can say is that after looking at Milkman and the Vintage Vibe 100 I decided on the Quilter. I thought all sounded great but money was a deciding factor and Quilter just had the features along with a more reasonable price. I also wanted an amp with more headroom and Quilter won out there also.

DEMO - Emmons push pull through a Quilter combo
I recorded some audio samples tonight, random licks, parts of songs, different styles, playing through the Quilter. No effects other than the reverb in the amp. RODE NT-USB mic placed directly in front of the amp.

I've tweaked the settings a dozen times since making the recording... but I do know that I had both the Gain and the Master at only 3, which is way lower than the volume would be on the bandstand.
These are the settings I'm currently using (subject to change):
Bass 7
Lo-Mid 6
Hi-Mid 5
Treble 6
Limiter 5
Tremolo 0
Rate 0
Reverb fairly high: about 6, dwell about 6, tone 6.
I expect that I'll make changes when I get on a bandstand, with bass and drums, etc. That won't be for about two weeks though. One difference I notice with this amp... the mids are very pleasing and I don't have to cut them way back like I did on all the old Peavey amps.
I'm playing an Emmons push/pull which has a bright sound to begin with. The pedal steel is direct into the amp, and the volume pedal (Sho-Bud with a new pot) is patched into the Send/Return jacks on the amp. If you're using the volume pedal Send/Return you have to use Channel 2 on the amp. The volume pedal send/return does not work with channel 1, just channel 2. That's how it's supposed to work. I called Quilter to check on that. I even got to talk to the Man himself!

I've done four gigs with the Quilter Combo so far, and I couldn't be happier. On all of these gigs I just used my Emmons, the amp, and a volume pedal. No effects. One AC to plug in... the amp. 5 minutes to set up, lightweight, and killer sound. I'm sold on this.
I might use my Boss delay on certain gigs, but it's not really necessary because the amp sounds so good on it's own.
I tried using my Black Box with this rig, but for some reason it kills most of the sweet highs coming from the amp. I used the BB for several years with my Steel King, every gig, and it worked perfectly, and did what a BB should do... smooth, even sound from every string, every fret, great separation of sound in the wound strings, etc. But with the Quilter it's unusable, for me anyway. I think it's because with the Quilter I patch the guitar directly into the amp, and use the send/return loop for the volume pedal. A very clean sound. So if I use the BB, the chain would be steel guitar - BB - amp. Doing that severely changes the tone of the amp... muffles a lot of the clean, crisp tones IMO. With the Steel King the chain was steel guitar - BB - volume pedal - delay - reverb box - amp. There was more stuff between the BB and the amp. As you probably know, the BB should be the first unit after the pickup.

Steelaire
Doug, As this amp doesn't have an aux. input, how do you think it would work out to play tracks through the second input?

quilter
Hello Doug, thanks for all the info. I have a Quilter Steelaire as well and I never paid much attention to the use of the BB since I kept it in my chain until reading your post as it does change the tone and not in a good way. I checked it with my MM HD 150 RP as well. Amazing
