I probably already have it. I played my last steel 23 years. If I play my Zum that long, I'll be over 70. I may have to go back to a lap steel and a 10 watt amp next time.

I have 6 Emmons D10's that are playeable and I would be happy with any one of them. I am rebuilding 2 '66 Bolt-ons and I have an idea that either of those would suit me fine also.

My JCH has served me well for 7 plus years so unless my rich uncle gets out of the poor house (so I can get a new JCH) this one will be fine.

Dreaming is just fine for this. If you could build exactly what you wanted, price no object, roadies provided, all the playing technique you want... and then had the ideal gig and your fav 5 band mates.

I just want my old ShoBud S-12 with the Emmons pickup back. I miss it more than any of my ex-wives (4 of 'em), girlfriends, or children. The worst mistake I ever made in my life was selling that guitar after I got my Pseudo Emmons (BMI).....I want it back........JH

Ok. What would most likely float my boat indefinitely... (roadie/ serpa porter included)
Custom MSA Millenium, hybrid with a wood top for a more Sho-Bud sound, 10 and 8 most attached to both necks.
Extended U-14 E9/B6 on close neck, Dobro bluegrass tuning on bottom but with minors on a pedal.
And extended C6 12 on far neck.
With compensators, Sierra E lockout, Franklin change, 2 pickups on each neck w/coil taps and blend control for each pair. 3 way eq each neck with swept mids. Stereo out of each pickup pair with pan for each.
Hilton custom stereo pedal, Dobro emulator box.
Avalon stereo tube preamp / compressor /Eq with Lexicon 448 LARC reverb inserted in Avalon w/ midi floor pedal control, into 200 watt tube amp 3 way JBL speakers.
If there are any suggestions for the copedants
This would be interesting to know also!
Something good for playing Thelonious Monk mebe.
Well ?

well this topic has certainly opened up greatly since the beginning, from current and classic axes to include almost science-fiction dreams of idealized psg's...
I'm gonna stick with the what I thought was the original premises...
if I was stuck with the choice of a
single D10 to play for the rest of my life, I would keep my circa 1973 ZB Custom, because in spite of it's vintage mechanical quirks, it has the sound I fell in love with as a youth.
If faced with owning a
single PSG for the rest of my life, I would keep my '98 Zumsteel U12, because at the time I researched manufacturers, agonized over tunings, color, fit and finish and the like, I fully expected I was purchasing the one guitar I would play til I die; I made my decision, and nothing but the opportunity to own the ZB and regain a piece of my adolescence (I call it my mid-life-crisis guitar-with some guys it's a red sportscar and a young blonde girlfriend-me it's a piece of furniture with strings) has changed my mind. The Zum is capable of anything I might ever be able to ask of it.
Either guitar MUST be played thru the '68 Twin Reverb with JBL d130f...

Well, I should apologize to Donald for my silly attempt at humor, and I'll seriously answer the question.
If I could play ONLY one D-10 for now into eternity... and the way our freedoms are being eroded, I wouldn't think that some sort of governmental control over what instruments we play is all THAT far-fetched... I'd play the PP Emmons I own now, a red-belly 1964 guitar, #1264018.
Donald, a "Little Buddy" was possibly the most inexpensive student-type guitar ever made, far flimsier than the worst S~B Maverick, MSA Red Baron, etc. Occasionally you see them on eBay. I pity the man who has to learn on a Little Buddy.

Did a little study of the Carter sponsored online steeler site. Of the 1300+/- PSGs listed in the US, these are the top 5 in each category:
Emmons-27%, ShoBud-16%, Carter-9%, MSA-8%, Zumsteel-7%
D10-61%, S10-21%, S12-14%, D12-3%, S14-1%
8/5-23%, 8/7-15%, 8/6-7%, 8/7-7%, 8/8-7%
Go figure.

Now that is interesting. I wonder what percentage of the 61% being D-10s are Emmons. My is guess higher.
Hey Herb I think your in the pink if the government clamps down and standardizes PSGs.
I imagine there are several good old boys from the south in the bureau of standards, that think Buddy Emmons is a demi-god, so your steels are safe to use for a long time
Dave Van Allan. On my proposed ideal set up, I was basically looking to have the best possible sound for recording/playing, and the most potential flexability for the instrument. Since this is forever. Garbage in Garbage out.
If I were to record a truely supurb instrument, it needs to have the full sound chain at the same level of quality as the instrument. I look at the instrument and ALL it's system components as a whole.
But 1st of course is the nut behind the wheel.
[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 28 February 2003 at 02:18 PM.]

Well this has petered out, unless this bump jars a few more from under their rocks... LOL
Emmons leads Hands down, with a smattering of Universals, A good Sho-Bud crowd and a good crossection of modern steels.
Quite enlightening, thanks folks. Next year I have to get to a convention and get my paws on an old Emmons just see what the buzz is about.
[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 10 March 2003 at 03:00 PM.]
