I think the hardest thing is just sticking with it even though it takes so long to reach a basic level of proficiency. It just takes a long time for a person of little talent, speaking of myself here, to make much progress. I guess that it would be easier now, when I started, all I had was Winnie Winston's book, there's much more instruction material availiable and it's easier to find.

The nicest part of steel guitar is when you find yourself out of tune, you just slide your way in tune and everyone thinks you did it on purpose. The hardest part is what Bill Moore said.

Rick,
What do you do when you're playing a three note chord and the middle note is out of tune?

Players at all levels. What is the ONE thing you find most difficult in playing pedal steel guitar ???
Other than "sounding good", I have a hard time:
* Explaining to other people why I'd take up a virtually impossible instrument in middle age;
* Explaining to other people exactly what this instument is.

I agree Intonation is right at the top of the list. A close second would be not to overplay in my humble opinion.

Buddy Cage always said the hardest part was learning to operate the volume pedal properly.... after only 20 months of playing, my list of difficult things seems so overwhelming... argh...
Oh, and what Johan said.. first string broke the other day, got 2 nice scabs on my left hand... yowwww
[This message was edited by Ricky0ne1 on 23 December 2002 at 12:04 AM.]
