Hey, Nate, sounds like you have a good lock on how to integrate talkbox into your band. I really like the difference between that and your "straight" steel sound. Cool.
Godfrey had great info about the classic units… from what I've seen they were mostly based around HF PA drivers. I would do some research into the reports of loose teeth and jaw problems related to frequent use…!
As for previous use, from what I've read it seems Alvino Rey made quite a splash with his unit, but even straight steel at the time was a novelty to many folks. Pete Drake achieved quite a bit of notoriety with his "talking steel guitar" thing… it might be with noting that it seemed to start pegging him as a "specialty sound" player in some circles, and apparently earned a measure of disdain from other Nashville steelers, (if that carries any weight). It's anew generation though, and something like that might be a real breakthrough sound.
Nice playing on your other band tracks, BTW. Sounds like a really fun band!

But seriously, Mark, thanks for the thoughtful words.
What's fascinating to me is how long this concept has been around for steel guitars yet never really used a lot or in a way that's not sorta goofy (no disrespect, I love me some Pete Drake!) I'm interested to see if more players get into doing something new with it.

I think Aerosmith's Joe Perry used it on Sweet Emotion too.
Ive got a Heil Talkbox (the original branded "Talkbox") another wonderful Dunlop product, but only used it a handful of times for recording with guitar. It takes quite a bit of practice though, as certain consonants and syllables are very difficult to reproduce accurately.
