Wow, I neglected this thread for a week and y'all ran wild. Thanks so much to everyone for all their thoughts and advice. I learned a ton.

Just to let you know how it all panned out, I did buy the wechter. The price was right and I liked it when I looked at it. Also, I HATE buying new instruments if I can possibly avoid it. I always bugs me to know how much value I lose the second I take the guitar out of the store. So a used intermediate guitar beats a new beginner guitar any day.

Right now, I'm really happy with the purchase. I actually got it for a hair under 500, due to some cosmetic flaws. The seller was a real gent and even texted me the day after the sale to wish me luck with it.

Now, I need to see how many of my lap steel skills transfer over. I mean, how different can it be, right?

The way Jerry Douglas puts the difference between dobro and lap steel hits the nail on the head, he says that the dobro is like a hand saw, whereas the lap steel is more like a chain saw.

The final few years Wechter/Scheerhorns were produced they shifted from Continental cones to Scheerhorn cones personally spun by Tim himself. As someone posted earlier, you can really hear the difference.
